Hill sweeps modified division at RPM Speedway

HAYS, KS (June 10, 2011) - ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill of Sharon Springs swept
the Teels Trucks IMCA Modified division at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Friday
evening, June 10.
After winning the first of two heat races and the Oldham Sales cash dash,
Hill started outside pole in the 20-lap main event. Josh Appel led the
opening lap before car problems benched him on the second lap, handing a
lead over to Hill he would not relinquish. Brendon Gemmill chased Hill the
latter part of the race but could not get by and had to settle for second.
Marty Clark was third, followed by Jerry Teel and Nate Moore. Kyle Rohleder
won the other heat race.
Marty Barth led the first 6 laps of the 20-lap Advantage Glass Plus IMCA
Stock Car feature. But on lap 7, ‘Racin’ Jason Schoenberger of Gorham went
around Barth on the outside to take control. A caution on the final lap for
a spinning Jay Hachmeister bunched up the field for a one lap shootout, but
Schoenberger held on for his third win of the season at Hays. Terry
Cunningham, Pat Bedore, Barth, and Jay Schmidt rounded out the top five.
Heat race winners were Adam Balthazor and Schoenberger.
The Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Sport Mod feature saw 3 different leaders,
all leading 5 laps apiece. Joe Couse led the first five laps before Clayton
Wilson took command on lap 6. But after a lap 11 restart, ‘Flyin’ Brian
Lariviere of Wichita gut under Wilson in turn 4 to take the lead, which he
would hold to the checkers. It was Lariviere’s fourth trip to victory lane
at Hays this season. Heat one winner Wilson had to settle for the runner-up
spot, trailed by Blaine Walt, Chris Heim, and second heat winner Couse.
Wakeeney’s Cody Ghumm won his second Lock N Load IMCA Hobby Stock feature at
RPM Speedway. Ghumm took the lead from Bret Hagan on lap 5 and never looked
back on his way to the winner’s circle. Aaron Honas, Luke Pfannenstiel, Cody
Pancake, and Kent Tammen completed the top five. Heat race victors were
Hagan and Cody Graham.
The Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compacts were also on hand, and Matt
Echevarria made the trek from Junction City worthwhile as he drove past
early leader Dean Herzog just past the halfway mark to claim the win in his
debut at RPM. Jesse Dunlap finished second, followed by heat two winner
Herzog, Allen Rice, and first heat winner Monte Honas.
It was ‘Stars & Stripes Forever Night’ with fans turning out in their red,
white & blue. The evening’s sponsor was American Tank Service of Hays,
celebrating 10 years of service.
The five regular divisions return to action on Friday, June 17, for ‘Tough
Enough to Wear Pink/A Race 2 a Cure Night’. Race time is 7:30 p.m.
