JEFF GORDON/ROLLIE HELMLING DIET PEPSI MIDGET CAR
ON DISPLAY AT IOWA STATE BANK IN DES MOINES
by: Thomas J Schmeh
Knoxville, IA (March 13, 2006) - Rollie Helmling’s famed Diet
Pepsi midget car that powered USAC-turned-NASCAR star Jeff Gordon to wins in the
‘Night Before the (Indy) 500’, Hut Hundred, Belleville Midget Nationals and
Eldora 4-Crown Nationals championships in 1991 is currently on display in the
lobby of the Iowa State Bank in Des Moines near the State Capitol building. The
car is on a three-week loan from the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum
in Knoxville, and is also helping promote Knoxville Raceway’s June 2-3
USAC-sanctioned Pepsi/Mt. Dew Knoxville Midget Nationals.
According to Iowa State Bank CEO John Burgeson, “We are proud to showcase a very
historic midget car in our long-time Capital Office at 627 East Street in Des
Moines. Of course, this means that we may need to find a more modern midget or
sprint car to put in our brand new office on the corner of 128th Street and
Hickman Road in Urbandale.”
