Lasoski Grabs Knoxville Loot During a Memorable Night of
Racing
By Bob Wilson
KNOXVILLE, IA (May 6, 2006) - Between the two of them, Danny Lasoski and Terry
McCarl have over one hundred feature event wins at Knoxville Raceway. Lasoski
claimed the 20-lap feature event win at the Marion County Fairgrounds Saturday
night to gain his 87th here as McCarl chased him at close range to the checkered
flags. The two men now share 130 wins at this historic oval, but Lasoski's most
recent $3,000 victory was not gained without a "Show-Me-State" effort.
Row one starter Shane Stewart led the field of twenty-four cars into the first
turn at the start of the twenty lap event. Lasoski chased him from his row three
start and uncharacteristically rode the cushion to a narrow advantage at the end
of two circuits. With Stewart sliding to second, Lasoski jumped to a wide margin
as he then vacated the cushion in favor of the bottom of the track
At the halfway point of the race, Stewart and McCarl had abandoned the bottom
and moved to the cushion in an effort to rundown the potent Dennis Roth Eagle
machine. Lap 14 saw McCarl take away the runner-up spot as both he and Stewart
had chased down Lasoski in lap traffic. In fact, the 15th lap saw McCarl nearly
overtake Lasoski in turn two as the former rode the cushion and the latter
hugged the bottom. What appeared to be a wild finish with five laps to go was
suddenly brought to a halt as the yellow flag was displayed for a stopped car in
turn two.
When the race resumed Lasoski was able to fend off a McCarl move on the cushion
in turns one and two. When the laps wound down to the finish it was Lasoski over
McCarl by a 10-car length advantage as the Missouri driver had moved up to the
cushion in the remaining go arounds. Some would say it was the National Sprint
Tour over the World of Outlaws. And then others would say it was just two old
Knoxville boys racin' each other.
Brian Brown made a hard charge on the late restart and finished third while
Craig Dollansky bettered Stewart to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
Rounding out the top ten finishers were Brooke Tatnell, Tyler Walker, Joey
Saldana, Jason Solwold and pole sitter Mark Dobmeier.
What made the night of racing such an historic occasion was the number of
drivers who broke the existing one-lap track record during qualifying time
trials. In all, 26 cars dashed under the track record of 14.907 set by Terry
McCarl during the 2005 Knoxville Nationals. Fastest of all was Brooke Tatnell
who slashed an unheard of half second off the McCarl mark to go an amazing
14.407 on this semi-banked half-mile dirt oval. Further, both the 360 class and
the 410 class set additional record marks on this evening.
In the 360-division feature event, Josh Higday led most of the distance to pick
up his 9th career win at this track. Higday utilized his row one start to take
the early lead in the 15 lap race. With Higday on the bottom, pole starter
Dustin Selvage found the cushion to be a faster way around the oval. On lap six
Selvage took the lead briefly but lost it again when he entered turn one with
too much speed and jumped the cushion. Higday reclaimed the top spot and seemed
to have learned a lesson from Selvage as he then moved to the higher spot on the
track and began to pull away from the field of twenty cars.
Though he finally came upon traffic on lap fourteen, Higday would not be denied
on this night and cruised to a 30 car-length win in his self-owned sprinter.
Chasing to the checkereds were Joe Beaver, Dustin Linquist from an 11th position
start, Jeff Mitrisin who started beside Linquist and 2005 track champ Jake
Peters. John Kearney, Brett Mather, Johnny Anderson, Selvage and Josh
Schneiderman rounded out the top ten finishers.
Forty-six 410 sprinters and forty-one 360 sprinters competed on the evening.
