Brown, Antill, Higday and Mitrisin
all win features at Knoxville
By Bob Wilson
KNOXVILLE, IA (July 8, 2006) - Twin Features
night at Knoxville Raceway saw Brian Brown, Brent Antill, Josh Higday and Jeff
Mitrisin all become victors at this central Iowa county fairgrounds Saturday
night.
In the first 410 feature, Brian Brown utilized his pole position start to grab
the early lead. Behind him Ricky Logan and Bronson Maeschen picked up the chase
with Billy Alley in tow. With the track showing a narrow groove, most drivers
found the fastest way around the big half mile to be the cushion. And, with
nothing left on the bottom it was only a matter of time before the slide jobs
began.
Lap four saw Alley slide Maeschen in turns one and two for the third spot while
Brown cruised out to a 15 car-length advantage. Lap seven saw Brown head into
lap traffic as no one was going to challenge "Brownie" on this night.
The race came to an abrupt halt with a single car accident on lap nine. Matt
Moro had lost a wheel which bounded over the first turn fence while his sprinter
took a couple quick tumbles. He was not injured but his car rode the tow hook to
the pits.
When the race resumed, Brown once again pulled away from the field. The up front
battle was for second as Alley continued to challenge Logan, who was aboard the
vacated Kerry Madsen ride. Lap after lap those two drivers battled until Alley
made a pass at the flag stand on lap eighteen.
In the end, it was Brown taking his fifth career win here in the WiseGuy
Motorsports Maxim by a full straightaway. The win paid the Missouri driver
$2,200. Alley and Logan finished in that order while Maeschen captured a career
finish in fourth. Skip Jackson held down fifth.
The second feature inverted the finish of the first as Brent Antill took the
lead at the start. One could truly say that it was Antill's first 410 start of
the year and the veteran powered the Jordan Brothers sprinter around the
Knoxville track riding high on the cushion. His initial challenger was Chris
Walraven who soon started going backwards in the pack of twenty starters.
Lap six saw Dusty Zomer move into the runner-up spot as both Walraven and Rager
Phillips began their fall to the tail. That allowed Jesse Giannetto and Clint
Garner to secure the chase of Zomer and Antill.
At the half-way point, Antill could claim only a four car-length advantage.
Three laps later Garner made a pass of Giannetto while two more laps saw Alley
do the same. With most of the front runners on the cushion it was easy to see if
someone was making headway in the field. Suddenly on lap seventeen Antill
faltered on the backstretch and Zomer moved by him for the lead. As this was
happening Alley put a big slider on Garner for third. Just after this quartet of
cars flashed past the start-finish line, the yellow was displayed for a stopped
car on the track.
During this slowdown in action, Zomer, the leader, came to the work area with a
flat left rear tire. This would force him to restart on the tail giving the lead
back to Antill.
Antill was able to fend of Alley in the final laps to capture his 9th career win
here at Knoxville. Alley held for second, Garner was third and Giannetto came
across for fourth. Brown, the winner of the first feature finished fifth.
In the first 360 feature it looked like David Hall would garner his first win at
this historical oval. Hall took the lead at the outset and created a nice
cushion between himself and runner-up Dustin Lingquist. Behind those two a fight
broke out between Johnny Anderson and Josh Higday.
It stayed that way until lap nine when Hall came into lap traffic and nearly got
sideways trying to miss one of them. That enable Lingquist to make up ground
rapidly on the leader and at the same time gave Higday an opportunity to get
past Anderson. And, with just two laps to go, it looked like it would finish
that way. But, anyone who follows racing knows that anything can happen.
Lap 14 saw John Anderson (no relation to Johnny Anderson) strike the turn two
fence bringing out the red flag. A second red was displayed on the ensuing
restart as Troy Meyer and Mike Houseman, Sr. crashed in turn four. Houseman went
into the Knoxville Area Community Hospital but later returned to the track.
When the race finally took the green again, Higday made a low groove pass of
Lingquist in turns three and four and on that same lap he also got by Hall by a
hair at the flag stand. With the track clear in front of him, Higday roared away
for the win. Hall was runner-up, a career best and Lingquist finished third.
Fourth went to Jake Peters as Johnny Anderson was fifth.
The completely inverted second feature saw Mike Trent take the quick lead when
the 15-lap race went green. He was trailed by Jon Corbin and Jeff Mitrisin.
A series of red flags ensued on lap three as first Joe Beaver and Johnny
Anderson came together on the backstretch. Beaver came to the work area but
Anderson was done for the night. On the restart Pete Crall somehow spun
backwards bringing out the red when it appeared he would tip over. He did not.
During this halt in action, Higday retired with brake problems and Beaver was
able to make the necessary repairs to re-enter the event.
Once restarted, the race went five more laps before it saw the final caution.
The lead had changed hands right before that and now belonged to Jeff Mitrisin.
Once Mitrisin took the top spot he set his Steve Wares-owned sprinter into high
gear and was never challenged for the lead. In the end, as Mitrisin took the
checkered flags, second place Mike Trent was entering turn three. That margin
was perhaps the greatest winning distance of the season here in either division.
Third went to John Kearney, fourth to Corbin and Brett Mather took fifth.
