Hedrick is 15th Harris Clash Winner
By Bob Wilson
KNOXVILLE, IA (July 20, 2006) - Jeremie Hedrick of Shawano, Wisconsin is $2,000
richer as a result of winning the 15th annual Harris Clash at Knoxville Raceway
Thursday night. The race was an IMCA sanctioned event.
The first several laps were wild as first Dave Trauernicht led lap one from his
pole position start. Third row starter Hedrick took lap two with Trauernicht and
Kevin Stoa coming across the line in a blanket finish for second. Lap three saw
Stoa with the lead as he shot out of turn four on the low side to pick off the
top spot. A yellow flag then brought the field of 28 cars into single file and
temporarily ended the fight for the lead.
On the restart Stoa placed his modified on the bottom of this half-mile dirt
oval and claimed the point position on the next two go-arounds. Lap six was
nearly a carbon copy of lap five but this time Hedrick roared out of turn four
on the bottom and shot down the front chute with the lead. As he roared into
turn three of that lap, he somehow became crossed up in the mid-track. At this
same time a close running Stoa slammed into Hedrick but each car managed to keep
running with what could be perceived as only cosmetic damage. None the less,
Stoa captured that lap and the next five as well.
Little by little Hedrick began to creep back into contention and as he and Stoa
to the flag ending lap twelve, there was only a half car length separating the
two. On the next circuit Hedrick had the lead at the start finish line by 15
feet. While this action was taking place for the lead, Trauernicht remained
close but was not a contender at this time.
At lap 15 it must be noted that Johnny Saathoff had moved to seventh after
starting 20th.
With Hedrick beginning to put some distance between himself and those who
followed, a great battle for the runner-up spot developed among Stoa,
Trauernicht, Jeff Anderson and Rick Stephan. Positions two through five changed
often as the laps began to wind down. Saathoff soon came into the mix as he was
perhaps the fastest car on the track.
Laps 20 to the end of the race saw Hedrick extend his margin and when he took
the checkered flag, second place Trauernicht was beginning his exit of turn
four. Third went to Stephan, Anderson garnered fourth and Saathoff took the
fifth spot. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Brian Mullen, Stoa,
defending champion Greg Metz, Bill Osbourne and Troy Cordes.
In the companion Sport Modified feature, Jacob Murray of Hartford, Iowa led the
15-lap distance to capture the $500 paycheck. Murray held the lead all the way
despite two slow-down yellows. Andy Tiernon, Brett Ladehoff, Ryan Lundy and
Austin Kaplan formed the top five finishers.
