Rain and Jon Corbin claim Knoxville season-ending races
By Bob Wilson
KNOXVILLE, IA (Sept. 2, 2006) - The 53rd season of weekly racing at Knoxville
Raceway ended Saturday night as Jon Corbin captured the final 360 feature event.
The final 410 feature was rain-postponed until October 7 during the make-up
World of Outlaws event. Track officials are hoping to run it right after
qualifying time trials on that night.
The rain event forced a two-hour delay until the call was made to postpone the
season championship for the 410 division until October. The track championship
will be up in the air until then as Billy Alley holds a narrow 45 points lead
over runner-up Brian Brown in one of the closest championship battles in
decades. With the feature race now being run in one month, the drivers can
decide the outcome rather than allowing the weather to do so.
In the 360 sprint division, Jon Corbin captured his second feature event of the
season when he took the 20- lap season championship race. It paid the Missouri
driver $1,500. Jake Peters had wrapped up the title on the prior week.
Pole sitter Josh Schneiderman took the immediate lead when the race went green.
On a narrow track the front running cars found the bottom to be the fast way
around the half-mile oval. A quick yellow flew after lap three for debris on the
track and by lap five, Schneiderman had developed an eight car-length advantage
over second running Corbin.
Lap six saw Jeff Mitrisin move into third as the top five cars had settled on
the bottom line. Just as Schneiderman finished lap nine, the yellow was
displayed for the slowing car of Josh Higday who had been running in the seventh
spot. He did not restart.
When the race went green again it did not stop until it was finished.
Schneiderman continued at the point with Corbin following. At the half-way point
of this ten mile race, Mitrisin still trailed Corbin as Bryan Dobesh followed in
fourth and Johnny Anderson completed the top five.
The race continued in this order and looked like it would finish that way until
the leader hit lap traffic on the backstretch of the seventeenth circuit.
Schneiderman came upon a slower car and ran up over the left-rear tire and ended
up nearly standing his car on its tail. As this happened, Corbin flew by him to
take the lead. Schneiderman was able to correct his sprinter but now had to
protect his second place spot from Mitrisin.
In the end, Corbin took the win with Schneiderman following. Mitrisin maintained
third, Dobesh was fourth and Anderson finished fifth. Completing the top ten
were Dustin Selvage, Brett Mather, Dustin Lindquist from nineteenth, John
Kearney from fifteeth and Joe Beaver from dead last.
