NATIONAL SPRINT CAR MUSEUM TO HOST “SALUTE TO EARL WAGNER” ON
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (Sept 9) - The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum and the
Knoxville Raceway are pleased to announce that they will present a “Salute to
Earl Wagner” on Tuesday evening, October 30, on the museum’s second floor from 6
until 10 p.m. The racing plumber from nearby Pleasantville won the Knoxville
Raceway point championship three times, twice for Harold “Slim” Gutknecht in
1958 and ’59 and once for Dean Sylvester in ‘61. A 43-time supermodified and
sprint car feature winner at Knoxville and the 1973 winner of the Western World
Championships at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix while driving for Hank Smith,
Earl will be honored in a social setting which will be free and open to the
public.
Following his retirement as a driver, which included a stint in United States
Auto Club (USAC) stock car racing, Earl was the Knoxville Raceway chief pit
steward (1975 – 2000), the mayor of Pleasantville, and a Marion County
Supervisor. National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductees Ralph Capitani of
Knoxville, for whom Earl worked as an official, and Bob Trostle of Des Moines,
for whom Earl drove, have both indicated that they plan to be present to honor
their friend.
Friends and family that can not join Earl Wagner on this special night at the
National Sprint Car Museum are encouraged to send him a note with a favorite
remembrance on it. Those notes can be sent to the museum at the following
address: Salute to Earl Wagner, NSCHoF&M, P.O. Box 542, Knoxville, Iowa 50138.
E-mailed notes may also be sent to sprintcarhof@sprintcarhof.com.
Food and drinks will be provided with freewill donations accepted. Those seeking
more information on the “Salute to Earl Wagner” are urged to contact Tom Schmeh
at 1-800-874-4488 or to visit the museum’s web site at www.sprintcarhof.com.
