It’s all Sioux Falls at Knoxville Sprints
By Bob WilsonKNOXVILLE, Iowa – Drivers from the Sioux Falls, South Dakota
area dominated victory lane at Knoxville Raceway Saturday night as Justin
Henderson (410) and Gregg Bakker (360) each won their respective feature
events at this central Iowa racing facility.
On a track that had turned hard and dry slick, Justin Henderson led the
distance in the twenty lap feature event from his pole position. Three
yellow flags slowed the race and actually forced it to go to 21 laps.
When the race went green at the start, Billy Alley fell in behind the
Henderson machine as a freight train formed on the bottom of the big
half-mile oval when everyone knew it was the fastest route on this night. By
lap 10 Dusty Zomer had utilized two yellow flags to claw his way from a
sixteenth position start to a third running position as he gunned his
sprinter to the very high cushion to take advantage of those restarts. All
of Zomer’s efforts were for naught as he weighed-in light at the scales
after the race was over and was relegated to last place.
Alley kept close to Henderson throughout the ten-mile sprint just waiting
for the Sunshine State native to make the mistake that never happened. Most
of the time he raced right behind Henderson but could never make a move with
the track conditions as they were.
With three laps to go, the front runners came upon lap traffic and most
anticipated the possibility of a lead change. That never happened as a
yellow was displayed on lap 19 for debris on the track, thus forcing a
green-white-checkered finish.
The win was the first for Henderson at this raceway as the second
generation driver received $3,000 for his efforts. Alley finished right
behind him with Skip Jackson, Randy Hannigan and Ryan Anderson forming the
top five. Completing the top ten were Brian Brown, Jake Peters, Brooke
Tatnell, Danny Lasoski and Brandon Wimmer.
Gregg Baker made it two in a row as he claimed the 360 feature event
after two quick yellow flags at the beginning of the event slowed the
action. Once the race finally went green, Bryan Dobesh assumed the lead from
his pole position. Following in close order was Bakker. The man on the move
was Josh Higday who ran the cushion despite the dry track conditions.
On lap seven, Bakker made his pass for the lead in turns three and four.
With the leaders now in touch with lap traffic, Higday again took to the top
of the track in an attempt to get by those front two cars, who were stymied
by the backmarkers. What looked to be an excellent move on Higday’s part
actually bit him in the end as he rode the cushion, struck the third turn
fence and rolled to a stop. He was not injured.
When the race resumed, Bakker began to put distance between himself and
Dobesh and when the checkered flags fell at the finish he had taken his
second feature in a row in the Knoxville Championship Cup Series. He was
trailed by Dobesh, Ryan Roberts, Jesse Giannetto and David Hall. Tom Lenz,
Matt Moro, Russ Hall, Natalie Sather and Joe Beaver completed the top ten.
