Heskin and Moro are winners at Marion County Fair sprint races

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 13) - An excited and animated Davey Heskin captured his first feature event at Knoxville Raceway Saturday night during the annual Marion County Fair. Matt Moro took top honors in the 360 sprint division.

Heskin, who is a third generation sprint car driver from St. Michael, Minnesota, started on the front row and never looked back as he led all twenty laps of the feature event. On a track which developed numerous grooves by feature time, Heskin was chased from the get-go by Billy Alley and Danny Lasoski. Heskin chose to run the bottom of the track and neither of his challengers was able to run him down. Both Lasoski and Alley appeared to experiment with the grooves to see if one was faster than the one Heskin had taken.

On lap five a red flag was displayed for Ryan Anderson who spun and rolled his sprinter into the turn one infield and stood it on its tail. He was not hurt and did not restart.
Once the race resumed, Heskin was in command again but this time Alley did not let him sneak away and stayed close through lap ten where he trailed by five car lengths.

Meanwhile, Lasoski could not maintain the momentum and drifted backward.

Lap 12 saw Heskin begin to pull away as he proceeded through lap traffic. At the same time he seemed to find a new line in turns one and two where he came up off the bottom and drove at about mid-track. Alley stayed on the bottom but could not mount a challenge to cut the lead.

As the race proceeded to the finish the battle to watch was between Alley and Lasoski, as those two began to fight it out for the runner-up spot. When Heskin hit heavy lap traffic on lap eighteen, Alley and Lasoski closed up while they raced nose to tail.

In the end this night belonged to Heskin who graciously thanked his family for their support in victory lane. Alley and Lasoski finished in that order while Brooke Tatnell was fourth and Justin Henderson took fifth. Rounding out the top ten with a great deal of passing and racing were Brian Brown (started 15th), Kaley Gharst (started 14th), Bronson Maeschen, Mark Dobmeier (started 19th) and Jake Peters.

Matt Moro claimed his fifth career feature event win in the 360 division. Two early red flags saw several drivers head to their trailers as Jon Agan led the front end of this fifteen lapper. Agan, who started on the front row of the 20-car field, was able to utilize the cushion in the early going to keep the lead. Dustin Selvage chased him at close range while running the bottom of the big half-mile oval.

Lap five saw Moro, who was a fifth row starter, take the runner-up spot as well as the chase of Agan. A red flag for a single car accident slowed the field and on the restart Agan had a battle on his hands as Moro made a challenge of it using the bottom groove. That strategy paid off for Moro as he took the lead on the ninth go around and kept it to the finish. It seemed that most of the drivers eventually discovered that the bottom was faster than the top and several of them made great drives because they found it sooner.

Following Moro and Agan to the finish was sixth row starter Josh Higday while Selvage claimed fourth. Seventh row starter, Clint Garner took fifth. Completing the top ten were Brett Mather, John Kearney (from 12th), Gregg Bakker, Natalie Sather (from 20th) and Joe Beaver (from 19th).

In celebration of the Marion County Fair, the board of directors of the fairgrounds also gave away to each feature winner a half of a beef and a half of a hog.
