Brian Brown – Too Much Fuel! (Bill W) March 25, 2009 – Considering he battled an ailing racecar, Brian Brown’s weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series went very well. Throttle linkage problems on Friday and a fuel leak on Saturday at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas took care of any chance at a win, but the Grain Valley, Missouri driver will be back in action with the series this weekend in Oklahoma City. The Devil’s Bowl opener will play to a TV audience on the Versus Channel May 2. That drew an enormous field topping 60 sprint cars. “The ASCS deal is going to be pretty tough night in and night out,” says Brian. “I think there were around 65 cars, and about 25 had a good shot of winning the thing if things fell their way.” Luckily, Brian’s heat race draw went well on Friday. “Our draw put us second row outside of the fifth heat,” he explains. “We were able to get up to second. I kept my distance between myself and (leader) Johnny Herrera. The new passing point system, where you lose points if you go backwards is a really good deal, and finishing second got us in the redraw.” The redraw included the top eight in passing points through the heats and Brian’s luck continued. “We were excited to draw the pole for the first Lucas Oil ASCS show,” he says of his draw. “Paul McMahan (starting outside row one) took off there, and I slid underneath him going into one. I kind of slid through the cushion and over the bank a bit. That let him squeak back by.” Brian tried to find a comfortable line on the big half-mile early on, and then the throttle problems surfaced. “The first two or three laps were probably driver-error as I was trying to find where I needed to be on the track,” he says. “I went to the bottom and Shane Stewart drove by me on the top. When he went by, he threw a mud clod down the right side of my hood. It broke the hood in half, and caved it in against the throttle linkage. So our throttle was open for the next 20 laps. Impact Signs went to a lot of hard work to make the car look good, so that part was unfortunate.” Despite the problem, Brian was able to maintain a fourth place finish and lock himself into Saturday’s finale. “I think we were just as good as the leaders,” he says. “I couldn’t really charge in there in traffic like I wanted to. I didn’t want to run over cars with the throttle sticking. There were holes that guys were hitting, and I tried to keep my distance a little bit. The good thing about the feature was finishing fourth, and locking ourselves in the finale.” With Friday’s top four finishers joined by the two point getters from Saturday’s heats, the draw for starting spots in the finale commenced. “The ASCS is doing a good thing this year where they invite kids out to draw for you,” says Brian. “My four or five year old girl was cute, but not the most lucky when she drew a five.” The SuperClean #21 team was thrown off by a late decision to rework the track before the 30-lap main event on Saturday. “The track looked like it might take rubber, so we had our car tightened up about as much as we could get,” says Brian. “We were ready to push off, and they decided to till half the track up. That put everybody in a predicament. We got caught with our hands behind our back a little there.” It didn’t matter much, however, when the car developed a fuel leak early. “We fell back a spot or so, and then developed a fuel leak,” says Brian. “So we pulled it in and saved it for another day.” This Friday and Saturday, Brian plans on competing with the ASCS at the 3/8 mile State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Brian's Q&A Al Haynes asks: What do you think of the Nationals going 40 laps this year? Brian answers: It’s good for the fans. For the driver that will lead the 29th lap, he’s going to wish it was over then. The guys behind him will be o.k. with it. The bad thing about it is, guys like me don’t have 33 gallon tanks. We don’t use enough fuel to justify going out and spending $1800 for them. There’s no way our 28 gallon tank will go that far. It is what it is. They are the boss. If they want to run 100 laps, we’ll put two or three tanks on there and do it. Got a question for Brian? Send it to us at sprntcar@iowatelecom.net, and we may answer it in this section!
