Brian Brown – Getting Back On the Right Foot!

(Bill W) April 8, 2009 – Brian Brown is looking for better nights than he had last Saturday at the LA Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri.  The Grain Valley, Missouri sprint car driver was involved in a scary crash in the feature event.  Fortunately, no one was injured.  He will get an opportunity to rebound this weekend at I-80 Speedway in Nebraska, a track he has had a lot of success at.

Disappointment came as early as last Friday, when the Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois pulled the plug on their Sprint Invaders event.  That left Saturday’s Winged Outlaw Warriors date in LaMonte for Brian.  Even there, things started badly.  “It was kind of a rough night all around,” he says.  “When we got there, we had trouble with our shifter cable.  We thought it may be something in the rear end, so we changed rear ends before we even got going.”

Weather and track conditions worsened, and Brian ran second to fellow front row starter, Randy Martin in his heat.  “We weren’t good in the heat race, and ran second to Randy in that,” he says.  “The track was already starting to take a little bit of rubber at that point.  Rubber-down racing is about the most boring racing for both fans and drivers.  Sometimes you can’t control it.  The wind was blowing hard all day long…it happens.  It is better than sitting at home.”

Brian would start outside row two in the main event.  He took the point shortly thereafter.  “With the rubber, we knew starting position was going to be a key,” he says.  “We were able to take the lead after starting fourth, so things were looking good for awhile there.”

Martin caught up when Brian slowed behind a lapped car, as real estate on the low side of the track became the place to be.  “We came up on a lap car with about eight laps to go, and I pushed up out of the rubber a bit,” he says.  “That let Randy get by us.”

With Brian in second, Jon third, and Jesse Hockett trailing in fourth, the worst happened.  Brian and Jon underwent wild flips, while Hockett had nowhere to go and was caught in the mess.  “Going down the back straightaway Jon and I got together, and that was it,” Brian shares.  “It was a bad deal, and we don’t have much of that car left.  That’s never good.  I’m just glad no one got hurt.”

Brian heads to I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska on Friday and Saturday for an ASCS-Midwest/Northern Plains doubleheader.  He has won four times in eight feature events that he has competed in at I-80.  “It was frustrating last year that we didn’t get to run there (weather), because it is one of my favorite tracks,” he says.  “Not being able to go there and race was pretty frustrating.  I’m looking forward to it.  Ed Kosiski always does a good job with the track.  There are usually two or three grooves to run.  This year, it looks like we’ll get there three or four times, and with the success we’ve had there, that’s great.  After last weekend, we just want to get back on the right foot.”

Brian's Q&A

Bob Wilson asks: Brian, the Nationals A Feature pays $7,000 to start.  Would that justify spending $1,800 on a new tail tank should you qualify for that event?

Brian answers: It’s the Knoxville Nationals, so even though the purse is second to none, if we raced for nothing, I’d be there.  Yes, I would buy the fuel tank.  At the Nationals, you think about the money a week later when you deposit it.  At the time, you could be racing for nothing, it’s the Knoxville Nationals.  I haven’t given to much thought to it (fuel tank) yet, because I’m not sure if there will be a fuel stop or not.  Until they decide that, I’ll be on the fence a little bit about finding a fuel tank.  We don’t really have a use for one anywhere else we run.  We haven’t really been close to running out of fuel anywhere, so we’ll wait and see what they decide.

Brown's Bits

In eight career feature starts at I-80 Speedway, Brian has four wins, five top fives and six top tens.  His four wins came consecutively, between July 8, 2005 and April 14, 2007.  He was leading the feature on April 15, 2007 when he fell out with mechanical problems.  Arguably his biggest win was a $2,000 score on this date in 2006 when he topped Chuck Swenson, Tony Bruce Jr., Jake Peters and Jeff Mitrisin.
