KNOXVILLE, IOWA (April 27, 2009) - The 2009 version of the Knoxville Masters
Classic winged 360-cubic-inch sprint car race for drivers age 50 and over
now boasts competitors from Alaska to New Jersey, and from Minnesota to
Texas. According to Knoxville’s director of racing Ralph Capitani, “Not only
are the veterans coming from every corner of the country, but these guys are
some of the best ambassadors this sport of sprint car racing has to offer.
‘Midge’ Miller, Bill Smith, Earnest Jennings and the rest are just some of
the nicest guys out there. And we were so sorry to hear this week of the
passing of Harold McGilton, the third-place finisher in the 1999 Masters
Classic. He was another true gentleman.”
The twelve (12) official entrants with cars are: Rev. Mark Amenda (Streator,
IL), Carl "Midge" Miller (Willingboro, NJ), Bobby Becker, Jr. (Denton, NE),
“Butch” Hanssen (Sioux Falls, SD), Dale McCarty (Eldorado Springs, MO),
Randy Droescher (Larchwood, IA), Bill Smith (Worthington, MN), Greg Rilat
(Texas City, TX), Earnest Jennings (Norman, OK), Lonnie Jensen (Lincoln,
NE), David Brown (Marshall, MO), and Wayne Redmond (Humboldt, IA). The three
(3) drivers entered without cars are: John McDonald (Houston, AK), Rick
Sorem (Big Lake, MN), and George Prosser (Mansfield, OH). Added Capitani, “I
see on www.hoseheads.com that Larry ‘Smokey’ Snellbaker is also looking for
a quality ride for the Masters. Talk about another great ambassador for our
sport!”
