History, Racing, and Fun in Store This Weekend at Knoxville!
(Bill W) May 27 - A huge weekend of racing, as well as a look at the past is
in store this weekend at Knoxville. It all starts Thursday night with
practice for this weekend’s 8th Annual Iowa Telecom/Pepsi Midget Nationals
and Friday’s Masters Classic. Over twenty drivers are signed in already for
the race for drivers age 50 and over, including former champions Mike Peters
and Randy Smith, as well as Sammy Swindell. The Masters will again pay
$3,000 to the winner. The King Doodlebug Classic for the midgets will run
Friday night, with Saturday’s events including the Pepsi USAC Knoxville
Midget Nationals, and the 410 sprints Knoxville Championship Cup showdown.
Throw in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum’s 20th Annual
Induction Banquet Saturday afternoon, and its going to be a full weekend,
indeed!
Peters, Smith and Swindell’s entries in Friday’s Masters Classic are joined
by Carl “Midge” Miller, Bobby Becker Jr., Butch Hanssen, Dale McCarty, Joe
McCarthy, Regan Kitchen, Randy Droescher, David Gailley, Bill Smith, Greg
Rilat, David Brown, Don Stoutner, Allan Unruh, Earnest Jennings, Lonnie
Jensen, Roland Johnson, Mike Houseman, Judi Bates, Rick Sorem and George
Prosser.
The midgets will be in action with full programs on both Friday and Saturday
nights. Over 50 pre-entries for the popular Midget Nationals include
defending champion Brad Sweet, and former winners Mike Hess and Jerry Coons
Jr. Others expected include NASCAR veteran JJ Yeley, Kevin Swindell, Brady
Bacon, Brad Kuhn, Levi Jones, Tracy Hines, Michael Pickens and Bobby East.

Johnny Herrera maintained his point lead by outlasting Terry McCarl in last
Saturday night’s 410 feature event. The big dogs will be back at it on
Saturday night! Lynton Jeffrey is currently running second in the points
race ahead of Brian Brown, McCarl and Don Droud Jr. Billy Alley, Dusty Zomer,
Bronson Maeschen, Mark Dobmeier and Kerry Madsen round out the current top
ten!

National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Induction Weekend
The 20th Annual NSCHoF induction weekend is highlighted by Saturday’s
induction banquet at the Dyer-Hudson Hall on the Marion County Fairgrounds.
Tickets are still available to the general public for $20 by calling the
NSCHoF at 1-800-874-4488. Inductees this year include Jac Haudenschild, Lee
Osborne, Roger Rager, Fred Rahmer, Rip Williams, Jackie Holmes, Kelly
Petillo, Lee Elkins, Tommy Nicholson, Jack Elam, Louis Senter, Allan Brown
and Jim Chini.
This Week’s Autographs
Drivers will be crossing the track during intermission between the heats and
features to sign on race nights. You’ll never know who will be coming over,
so be ready!
