Iowa SpeedWeeks After Round 1 at Newton
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (August 1, 2009) - Shane Hmiel has taken the early lead in
the 2009 Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Iowa SpeedWeeks point championship,
which will crown “Mr. Sprint Car” after 12 races in 11 nights of sprint car
racing in central Iowa, following his win in last night’s 50-lap United
States Auto Club (USAC) sanctioned Casey’s General Stores Challenge at the
Iowa Speedway in Newton. Attention will now turn towards ten straight nights
of sprint car racing at the Knoxville Raceway (August 6-9, 12-15) and the
Southern Iowa Speedway (August 10-11) in Oskaloosa, respectively.
The ‘top 16’ in the Cox Design Iowa SpeedWeeks point standings are as
follows: 1. Shane Hmiel 50 pts., 2. Bobby Santos III 49 pts., 3. Dave
Darland 48 pts., 4. Tracy Hines 47 pts., 5. Jacob Wilson 46 pts., 6. Bobby
East 45 pts., 7. Cole Whitt 44 pts., 8. Damion Gardner 43 pts., 9. Levi
Jones 42 pts., 10. Darren Hagen 41 pts., 11. Henry Clarke 40 pts., 12. Brian
Gerster 39 pts., 13. Brad Sweet 38 pts., 14. Jerry Coons Jr. 37 pts., 15.

The 12-race “Mr. Sprint Car” title chase includes three USAC non-winged
sprint car races, three American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) winged
360-cubic-inch sprint car races, and six winged 410 c.i. sprint car races.
The August 10 winged ‘410’ race at Oskaloosa will be sanctioned by the All
Star Circuit of Champions, with the other five races being non-sanctioned or
open-competition. The August 14 winged ‘410’ race, the Knoxville World
Challenge, is an invitational featuring top drivers from the United States,
Canada, and Australia. Last night’s sprint car race at the Iowa Speedway in
Newton marked the first-ever pavement round in the eight-year history of the
Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Iowa SpeedWeeks point championship, which
previously only involved events at the Knoxville Raceway and Southern Iowa
Speedway in Oskaloosa.
