Carla Roynon and Johnny Herrera to Join Buddy Bielarski and
Rick Crawford at
National Sprint Car Museum on Thursday with Fred Moore Supermodified #R-1
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (September 2, 2009) - Carla Roynon Herrera, daughter of
veteran supermodified and sprint car racer Bill Roynon, and her husband
Johnny Herrera, the current Knoxville Raceway point leader, will join
Mobile, Alabama’s Buddy Bielarski and his nephew Rick Crawford at the
National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum on Thursday for a special
reception from 6 until 9 p.m. featuring Buddy’s newly-restored southern
supermodified number R-1. The car, recently restored by Rick Crawford’s
Circle Bar Racing/NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team in North Carolina,
is best remembered when it was owned by Fred Moore of Pensacola, Florida,
and driven by Bill Roynon of Tampa, Florida, on Walter “Skip” Wetjen’s tough
Speedway Inc. circuit in the Gulf Coast region of the Deep South in the
1960’s.
According to museum executive director Bob Baker, “We are pleased to be
honoring several people associated with the R-1 supermodified, including the
late Bill Roynon. Having Carla Roynon Herrera here, with her family and
friends, to reunite with Buddy Bielarski will be special. The car arrived at
the museum this morning, and we certainly have to thank the two Truck Series
teams for making the effort to deliver the car this morning. We look forward
to meeting NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Rick Crawford tomorrow
evening, just days before his Speed Channel-televised Truck Series
appearance in the Lucas Oil 200 at the Iowa Speedway in nearby Newton.”
Those seeking more on the Thursday, September 3, special reception featuring
Carla Roynon, Johnny Herrera, Buddy Bielarski, Rick Crawford, and the Fred
Moore/Bill Roynon number R-1 are encouraged to visit the museum’s web site
at www.sprintcarhof.com. Those seeking more information on Buddy Bielarski,
Bill Roynon and “Skip” Wetjen’s circuit are encouraged to buy the book
“Southern Supermodifieds and Other Early Racers” by Gerald Hodges at
