Moyer is back to back in 7th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals
By Bob Wilson

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (October 1) - Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas repeated his 25-lap feature event win of twenty-four hours earlier as he again appeared in victory lane here Friday night in the 7th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals.

The crux of the Thursday and Friday qualifying events is to accumulate as many points as possible in which to gain a top starting spot in the finale on Saturday.  Therefore most drivers race Friday night hoping to better their point totals of Thursday.  That is exactly what Moyer did as he moved from a sixth spot in the point totals on Thursday to tie Scott Bloomquist with 488 markers.  Bloomquist’s faster time trial on Thursday was the tie breaker meaning that he would get the nod to start on the pole of Saturday’s championship race while Moyer would gain the spot right beside him.

Friday’s 25 lapper found race rookie Will Vaught out front early from his pole position start.  Disaster came early for him when he struck the front stretch wall on lap three with a glancing blow and brought out the yellow when he stopped on the backstretch.  He had a flat right front tire.

Josh Richard pick up the pace on the restart and the race would never go yellow again to the finish.  Right behind him was Kelly Boen who had a determined race-long battle with Darrell Lanigan.  Both drivers would suddenly give way that runner-up spot to Moyer on the sixth go around.

Both leader Richards and second place Moyer utilized this early portion of the race to try several different lines to test their swiftness.  At lap ten Richards could claim a fifteen car-length lead.

For those in the grandstand who were watching the front, they were missing the marvelous run of fifteenth starter Tim McCready.  Though most drivers found the bottom to be fastest, McCready was on the high cushion and moving forward.  By lap thirteen he had moved into the fifth position and four laps later he made a pass of Lanigan to gain fourth.

With five laps to go, Richard’s lead had shrunk to six car lengths in lap traffic.  The top three contenders, Richards, Moyer and Boen were all on the bottom as it was fastest.  Coming to lap traffic in turn three of the 22nd circuit, Richards went high to pass while Moyer dove below him.  At the line Moyer could claim the lap.  Boen also made a pass of Richards on the next go around.

Moyer led the remaining laps to claim the $7,000 win, his 23rd of the season.  Boen claimed second and $4,000 and Richards settled for the $3,000 third place check.  Completing the top five were Lanigan for fourth, as he made a late race pass of fifth place McCreadie.  Completing the top ten were Brian Birkhofer, Dan Schlieper, Steve Francis, Darren Miller and event rookie Austin Hubbard who took passing honors from a 22nd start to finish 10th.

A companion modified program produced a very entertaining 20-lap feature event as what looked to be a repeat winner from the previous night did not come about.

Thursday night winner Jimmy Gustin had control of the race from the outset.  Though he did not “run away and hide” as he had on the previous night, he seemed to have the race well in hand through two yellows which took him to the half-way point.  Todd Shute had chased Gustin twenty-four hours earlier and he did so again on this night.

Lap 13 saw smoke beginning to pour from the Gustin machine and he began to slow allowing Shute and several other contenders to pass him.  He brought out the yellow after stopping on the track and  went pi tside with a dead engine.

When the race resumed Shute had the point, a position he would not relinquish to the end.  At the finish he was 20 car-lengths  ahead of second place finisher Jon Snyder.  It was Shute’s first win here and he received $1,500 for his efforts.  Darin Duffy, Luke Wanninger and Jeremy Mills (from 17th) completed the top five finishers.
