Foster Conquers IMCA Modified field at Donnellson
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, Ia. (May 5, 2006) - Josh Foster claimed his first Discount
Tire IMCA Modified feature win of 2006 after surviving the 20-lap event on
Denmark and Wever Community Night at the Lee County Speedway. Foster started
seventh but drove his Five Star Drywall / All-Pro Mowing & Lawn Care / Raider in
between traffic, at times three-wide, and worked past pole-starter Dennis
LaVeine at the completion of lap 2. As the field jockeyed for position, the
Montrose, Iowa driver stumbled two laps later, nearly looping his machine and
subsequently blasting through the infield in a cloud of dust. After returning to
the racing surface, LaVeine had retaken the top spot and Foster was trying to
hold off four cars for second. Foster then ran down LaVeine and waited through a
slew of mid-race cautions to pick up the popular win. Kevin Cale used the
cushion to get by LaVeine late in the race, while Jim Gillenwater and Dave
Wietholder rounded out the top five.
Another wild race for the lead ensued in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock
15-lapper. By virtue of some bad luck on opening night, Jake Wenig was inverted
to the pole position and promptly moved his Family Motors / Monte Carlo into the
lead. Jim Oliver, Jr. and Dan Wenig were in tow the entire distance and were
ready to capitalize on the eleventh lap. As the leaders approached the back of
the field, two lapped cars made contact and spun to the inside of the track just
as Wenig was making the underneath move. He avoided the mess, but not before
Oliver, Jr. and Dan Wenig could get by. However, the ensuing caution put Jake
back on the point and he led the rest of the way, holding off Oliver, Jr., Dan
Wenig, Chris Webb, and Matt Gavin.
Wyatt Lantz earned his first Arrowhead Bowl B-Modified triumph of 2006. The
Bowen, Ill. driver was on a rail throughout the 15-lapper in his Keokuk
Collision Center / McDowell Crane Service / Raider. Thad Gaylord led the opening
circuit before giving way to Brandon Savage. The rookie B-Mod pilot would lead
for three laps before Lantz took command. Tom Goble finished second ahead of
Jack Evans, Jr., Savage, and Jim Kuhlmeier.
John Oliver, Jr. ended Ryan Meyers hot streak in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car
Main and put his Oliver Tri-County Heating & Air / Century 21 / Chevrolet into
the winners circle. Oliver, Jr. took the lead from Jeff Mueller on the opening
lap and led the balance of the 15-lapper. Mueller held off a charging Meyer for
the runner-up spot ahead of Kirk Kinsley and Dennis Harwood.
Tyler Schulte picked up his first GM Giant Wild Thing win of the season, while
Joel Kerr topped the first-ever Rookie Rally a race designed for those
competitors that have never won a feature event. Schulte held off last weeks
winner Dennis Schulte and Travis DeMint in the feature ahead of Kerr and Chuck
Fullenkamp. Ron Kibbe garnered a second-place effort in the Rookie Rally with
DeMint, Fullenkamp, and Luke Davidson completing the top five.
Caseys General Stores presents the action at Lee County Speedway next Friday
night. Race time is 7:30 for the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, B-Modifieds,
Hobby Stocks, and Wild Things.
