Thye, Webb Earn First Donnellson Checkers of 2006
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 23, 2006) – Darin Thye started his Costello’s / Ewing
Trucking / Pierce on pole and led all 20 laps of the Discount Tire IMCA Modified
Main. The Burlington, Iowa driver held off late-race pressure from points leader
Josh Foster, but earned his first win of the season. Foster and Kevin Cale
followed Thye across the line, while Dave Wietholder and Lonnie Heap completed
the top five.
Chris Webb put his Brown’s Auto Salvage / Heap Ag Service / JMG Motorsports /
Monte Carlo on the top side and maneuvered around early leader Jim Oliver, Jr.
on lap 8. The Biggsville, Ill. driver led the rest of the way and scored his
first win of 2006. Rodger Dresden led an intense battle for second to the line
ahead of Matt Gavin, Oliver, Jr., and Dan Wenig.
Close racing was the name of the game in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature.
At one point in the 15-lapper, the top seven cars were all within striking
distance of the lead. Ryan Meyer worked from his tenth starting position and
overtook Boe McLaughlin by lap 5. Meyer and Jeff Mueller battled to the stripe,
with Meyer coming out on top. McLaughlin, Abe Huls, and Dave Hemsted finished in
the top five.
Dennis Schulte quietly moved up from eleventh starting spot in the GM Giant Wild
Thing feature. The veteran wrestled the lead away from 14-year old rookie Stevie
Shull on lap 6 and never looked back to pad his points lead. Jim Oliver, III
crossed the line second, as Shull earned his best-career finish in third. Travis
DeMint and Luke Davidson ended the event in the top five.
Rob Hammel led the Rookie Rally for the Wild Things wire-to-wire. Hammel beat
David Helenthal to the line to claim his first win at Lee County Speedway.
Wyatt Lantz got to the front early and stayed ahead of the rest of the Arrowhead
Bowl B-Modified Mayhem. Lantz shadowed Jim Gillenwater until working past on lap
11 in his Keokuk Collision Center / McDowell Crane Service / Raider. Scott
Boles, Chad Sovern, Tony Dunker, and Bob Jennings followed Lantz across the
line.
Wednesday, June 28th, the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders return to the 3/8-mile
for the third of five scheduled visits. Race time is 7:30 for the Olson Bros.
Custom Shop / Budweiser-sponsored event.
