First wins for Gillenwater, Helenthal at Lee County Speedway
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, IA (August 4, 2006) – For the first time since 2001, Jim Gillenwater
found himself in victory lane at the Lee County Speedway in his Discount Tire /
Arrowhead Bowl / SJ Smith Welding / Pierce. The Keokuk, Iowa driver led flag to
flag in the Arrowhead Bowl B-Modified 15-lapper. Phillip Beard was within
striking distance over the final third of the event, but slid into the guardrail
on the final set of corners and dropped from second to eighth. Jeff Waterman,
Jack Evans, Jr., Scott Boles, and Wyatt Lantz rounded out the top five.
Ryan Meyer and Jeff Mueller battled throughout the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car
finale. A lap 11 caution set up Mueller’s winning pass with two laps remaining
in his Hot Toddie’s Bar & Grill / Hawkeye Pizza / Regal. The win marked
Mueller’s fourth of 2006. John Oliver, Jr., Dennis Harwood, Darin Thye, and Abe
Huls finished in the top five.
Doug Fenton and John Oliver, Jr. exchanged the lead four different times during
the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature. Off the final turn, Oliver, Jr. turned
the car to the inside and beat Fenton to the line by inches in his Oliver
Tri-County Heating & Air / Cutlass. Brad Weber, Matt Gavin, and points leader
Dan Wenig ended the event in the top five.
Jody Wood led the Discount Tire IMCA Modified feature field to the green and led
the opening circuit. Tyler Cale slipped past for the next three laps, before
giving way to Montrose, Iowa’s Josh Foster in his Five Star Drywall / All-Pro
Mowing & Lawn Care / Raider. Darin Thye and Kevin Cale tried to track down
Foster in the non-stop 20-lapper, but ran out of laps. Brandon Lennox nipped
Tyler Cale at the line for fourth.
David Helenthal earned his first career GM Giant Wild Thing feature win by
nearly a straightaway over Tyler Schulte in the 12-lap affair. Dennis Schulte,
Ron Kibbe, and Travis DeMint followed the lead duo across the line in the
non-stop feature.
Tuesday night, August 8, will be the annual running of the American Shorttrack
Nationals, featuring Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace, and Dave Despain. Race time is
7:30, with Open Late Models gunning for a $2,000 winner’s share. Hobby Stocks
and Wild Things fill out the card.
