Shiverfest Lives Up To Its Name; Lodge, Cook, Hovden, Lantz
and DeMint Victorious
by Jeff Broeg
DONNELLSON, IA. (Oct. 22, 2006) – After a Saturday rainout the seventh
running of Shiverfest took place at the Lee County Speedway Sunday afternoon and
evening under cold and windy conditions. The nasty weather did not deter a solid
field of 147 cars in five divisions though and a few hundred hearty race fans
saw some great racing action as Donovan Lodge, Jason Cook, Chris Hovden, Wyatt
Lantz and Travis DeMint took feature wins.
Lodge started side-by-side with Bruce Hanford on the front row of the Modified
main event and the two drivers waged an entertaining battle throughout the
twenty-lap distance. Hanford was able to nose ahead of Lodge for the lead on lap
seven, but that would be the only lap that he would lead as Lodge regained the
advantage and then held off persistent challenges from Hanford for the win.
“Beating Bruce Hanford on a fast race track like this is the highlight of my
career,” stated Donovan in victory lane celebrating his first Shiverfest title.
Brandon Lennox was not far behind in third while Vern Jackson and Josh Foster
completed the top five.
It looked as if the brothers Cook would run away and sweep the top two positions
in the Stock Car main event, but when the right rear tire on Ryan’s second place
car went flat with just two laps to go he was forced to pit. This gave Quad City
area driver Rob Henry a chance to challenge Jason Cook for the lead, but Cook
held off Henry for the final two laps to take the victory. Chris Wibbell picked
up the third spot with Chuck Hawkins and Jerry Pratt next in line.
The B-Modifieds pleased the chilled crowd by running their feature fifteen laps
non-stop and it was Wyatt Lantz leading all the way. Jack Evans Jr. tried to
track down Lantz in traffic before settling for runner-up honors at the
checkers. Brett Ladehoff, Jeff Waterman and Scott Boles rounded out the top
five. After early leader Chuck Underwood was forced to the pits missing his
right rear wheel, the Hobby Stock feature saw an exciting three-car battle for
the top spot in the closing laps with Doug Fenton, Rodger Dresden and Chris
Hovden going three-wide off turn four looking at the white flag. Hovden
established himself on the final lap and the northeast Iowa driver completed his
rookie racing season by taking the Shiverfest win over Dresden and Fenton.
In the four cylinder “Wild Thing” finale John Flury lead early before Tyler
Schulte took the lead on lap four. Then, on a lap seven restart, the top two
were slow on the go button and Travis DeMint shot past from third. Schulte tried
to recover, but could not keep DeMint from earning his first career feature win.
Flury was third followed by Dennis Schulte and Geoff Theobald.
With the support of sponsors, drivers and fans, Shiverfest raised $1,240 for the
individuals and families who are battling kidney disease at the Southeast Renal
Dialysis Units in Mt. Pleasant, Keokuk and Burlington. This amount was helped
out when Paul Boles of Boles Auto Sales matched the winning 50/50 amount and
when 50/50 winner Jerry Pratt donated his winnings back to the dialysis units.
Area sponsors who made direct contributions to the dialysis units included KILJ
Radio, Hagge Insurance, Home Furniture, Becker’s Jewelers, Brown’s Shoe Fit,
Mike Henderson-Edward Jones Investments, Dave’s Foods, Access Energy Cooperative
& Access Energy Propane, Mt. Pleasant Tire & Service and Hy-Fee Food Store.
