Cale and Waterman grab first of the season at Lee County
Speedway
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 8, 2007) – After a string of bad luck to start the 2007
season, Tyler Cale held off his Dad, Kevin, to earn his first A-Feature on
Farmers& Merchants Mutual Telephone Company nigh it. The Donnellson, Iowa,
driver led every lap from the pole in his Darbyshire Trucking / Donnellson
Elevator /Auctions by Smith / Champion / Chevy. The 15-lapperwas marred by a
half-dozen cautions, including three attempts at the original start and engine
failures byChris Larson and two-time season winner Rich Smith. The father-son
duo rode the cushion around the3/8-mile over the final five laps and finished
ahead of Billy Roberts, Mike Weikert, Jr., and Mike Irwin.
Another driver that was looking for a little luck from the racing Gods was
Quincy’s Jeff Waterman. In much the same fashion, Waterman put his Outdoor Power
/Amsoil / Chevy in the front and led all the way inArrowhead Bowl B-Modified
competition. Jim Gillenwater ducked to the inside of Waterman coming to the
checkers, but came up a car-length short. Chad Sovern battled back from an early
spin to finish third, while Jack Evans, Jr., and Wyatt Lantz rounded out the top
five.
The Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature saw six different leaders throughout the
15-lap distance. Abe Huls, Nic Fenton, and John Oliver, Jr. all led before Jason
Cook seemed to take the lead for good on lap 7. Three lapslater, terminal
driveshaft failure sent Cook to the infield and Oliver, Jr. went up in smoke
while running second. That turned the lead over to rookie Corey Strothman for
the five-lap dash to the finish, but Jeff Mueller blasted past on the restart to
put his Total Connections Electric / Hawkeye Pizza / Rick’s Auto Sales / Regal
into the winner’s circle. Strothman, Kirk Kinsley, Chris Wibbell, and Brandon
Rothzen completed the top five.
Jake Wenig led the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature from the pole and looked
to have the field covere dover the 15-lap distance. Wenig’s car came up lame on
lap 9 with a flat right rear tire, handing the lead toDoug Fenton. Fenton held
off Beau Taylor and Rookie Rally winner Rob Wilsey to pick up his first
2007victory in his Fenton Sales & Pawn Shop / Kole King Flat Track Racing / D&L
Machine Shop / Nova. Jim Lynch and Jim Oliver, Jr. finished in the top five.
In one of the best GM Giant Wild Thing features in recent memory, Travis DeMint
overtook early leader Jayson Barnes on lap 8 and had to contend with Alex Eaves,
David Helenthal, and Michael Grossman over the final four laps. DeMint earned
his second feature win of 2007 in his Feinberg Iron / Warsaw FFA / Integra.
Helenthal finished second, while Grossman, Ryan Anderson, and Jim Oliver, III
followed across the line.
Pilot Grove Savings Bank will help Lee County Speedway celebrate the 10th
Anniversary of the Hoenig’s tenure at the facility. Race time is 7:30 for all
five weekly classes.
