Cale and Bailey beat the Monsoon at Donnellson
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, IA (June 22) - With many area programs already KO-ed by Mother
Nature, Lee County Speedway dodged two tornado warnings and constant lightning
before succumbing to a monsoon immediately following the IMCA Late Model
feature. With two features in on Access Energy / Access Propane / Yellow Book
USA / Backslash Technologies Night, it will be double features next weekend for
the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks, Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars, Arrowhead Bowl
B-Modifieds, and GM Giant Wild Things.
In the caution-free Discount Tire IMCA Modified feature, Tyler Cale led flag to
flag to score his second main-event win of 2007 in his Auctions by Smith /
Darbyshire Trucking / Donnellson Elevator / Raider / Chevy. Rich Smith closed to
within a couple car lengths of the Donnellson, Iowa driver but never challenged
for the top spot. Smith had to contend with tenth-starter Josh Foster over the
final handful of laps and held off the defending track champion for the
runner-up position. Kevin Cale and Brandon Savage rounded out the top five.
The Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model 25-lapper was a barnburner as early leader
Sam Halstead dueled with Tom Darbyshire for the first two-thirds of the event.
At one time near the race's midway point, the top seven cars were within
striking distance of the lead, including Lonnie Bailey, Matt Strassheim, Justin
Reed, Gary Russell, T. J. Criss, and Boone McLaughlin. With five to go,
Halstead, Darbyshire, and Bailey had separated themselves from the group and
searched for
the quick way around the ultra-heavy 3/8-mile. While Darbyshire checked up for
Halstead's pushing Rayburn, Bailey blasted by on the backstretch in his Triple R
Performance / Barney's Tavern / Bob's Auto Body / Rocket / Intrepid. Bailey went
on to pick up the win over Darbyshire, Halstead, Strassheim, and Reed.
At that point, the skies opened up before the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock
feature could get to the track from staging. Jake Wenig was able to capture a
thrilling Hobby Stock victory on Wednesday during
POWRi Midget competition. He is scheduled to start in the second row next week.
