Kinsley earns Mid-Season championship checkers as nine
different drivers make victory lane
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, Ia (June 29, 2007) - Nine different drivers scored feature wins
on Jim Baier Mid-Season Championship / Dukes of Hazzard Night at the Lee
County Speedway.
Kirk Kinsley worked the cushion to perfection in the nightcap for the
Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars as he held off constant pressure from both John
Oliver, Jr. and Jeff Mueller. All three drivers had a shot at the win on the
final lap, but it was Kinsley's Superior Arms / Lawson Racing Engines /
Odessa Mechanical Contracting / Buick holding on for his second win of 2007.
Brandon Rothzen and Abe Huls rounded out the top five.
Jason Cook won his second feature in as many nights in the make-up feature
driving his Keystone Beer / 4th Street Bar & Grill / Welcome Inn /
Oldsmobile. Cook worked past early leader Doug Huls on lap 4 and led the
final 11 laps. Huls held on for his career-best second place showing ahead
of Derek Goble, Kinsley,
and Oliver, Jr.
For the third time in 2007, Rich Smith entered victory lane in his S&J Tube
/ Weikert Iron & Metal / Harris / Chevy. The Davenport, Iowa driver slipped
past Billy Roberts on lap 15 in the Discount Tire IMCA Modified 20-lapper
after Roberts had trouble negotiating a lapped car. Mike Weikert, Jr., Kevin
Cale, and Brandon Savage followed across the line.
One day before tying the knot, Matt Tucker has a Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock
trophy for the wedding cake as he worked the top line to perfection in his
Denmark Locker / Lake Wilderness / Monte Carlo. Jim Oliver, Jr. and Doug
Fenton gave chase, but never could get by as Tucker picked up his second win
of 2007 in the 15-lapper. Dan Wenig and Rodger Dresden finished in the top
five.
The same trio finished at the front of the make-up 15-lapper, but it was
Oliver, Jr.'s Oliver Tri-County Heating & Air / Blair Little Aldi Foods /
Cutlass at the head of the field. Tucker, Fenton, Jake Wenig, and Rob Wilsey
completed the top five.
Joe Hooper was credited with the Arrowhead Bowl B-Modified Mid-Season
Championship feature in his Tim's Machine Shop / RSC / Raceworks / Skyrocket
/ Ford after Wyatt Lantz was disqualified for an illegal right-front mud
plug. Jim Gillenwater, Jeff Waterman, Chad Sovern, and Jerad Fuller finished
in the top five.
Gillenwater drove his Discount Tire / SJ Smith & Welding / Arrowhead Bowl /
Fastenal of Keokuk / Pierce / Chevy to his first win of 2007 in a wild
make-up feature. Six cautions slowed the 12-lapper for various spills.
Waterman, Hooper, Lantz, and Jim Kuhlmeier
rounded out the top five.
Michael Grossman became another first-time winner on the 2007 season in GM
Giant Wild Thing competition as he put his Griffin Muffler & Brake / Keokuk
Racing Store / Barnes Body Repair / Saturn at the head of the 25-car field
and never looked back. Grossman held of defending track champion Dennis
Schulte and current track points leader Travis DeMint for the victory. David
Helenthal and Jim Oliver, III had top five runs.
Travis DeMint was not to be denied in the finale as he was never challenged
in his Feinberg Iron / Warsaw HS FFA / Accura. Grossman settled for second,
while Oliver, III, Helenthal, and Schulte ended the event in the top five.
Next week, the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders, Modifieds, and Hobby Stocks
will be in action during the annual running of the Lee County Fair. Race
time is 7:30.
