Season opener awaits Donnellson as Pepsi presents IMCA Late Models By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, Ia (April 22) – The sound of high-RPM horsepower is scheduled to return to the Lee County Fairgrounds this Friday as Pepsi presents the season opener for the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing Series Late Models, Modifieds, and Stock Cars, unsanctioned Hobby Stocks and Wild Things. Race fans are encouraged to have a drink on the speedway as the “Thirsty Friday” promotion will kick off the 22-race schedule on April 25. The Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models are scheduled to compete in their first of five events on the 2008 schedule. Tom Darbyshire of Morning Sun, Iowa, enters Friday’s $800 to win 25-lapper as the defending mini-series champion. Other drivers earning feature wins a year ago were former track champions Mark Burgtorf (Quincy, Ill.) and Lonnie Bailey (Quincy, Ill.), defending IMCA National runner-up Terry Neal (Ely, IA), and veteran Boone McLaughlin (Mediapolis, IA). Also on the card are the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds, Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars, Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks, and the GM Giant Wild Things. All gates open at 5:30 for the 5-class show. Hot laps are scheduled for 7pm with racing to follow at 7:30. Grandstand general admission $10 for Adults, $9 for Seniors, $7 for Students 11-17, and Free for Kids 10 and under. All race fans will receive their first drink free under the new “Thirsty Friday” promotion. Each individual that purchases an admission ticket will receive a stamped wooden nickel that they can redeem at the concession or beer stand courtesy of Pepsi, Miller Lite, and Budweiser. Fantasy Racing is also coming to Lee County Speedway in 2008. Race fans are encouraged to pick up an entry form at the TA Auto and Tire Junior Fan Club Booth and choose five competitors from any class in competition during the night. Your picks will be scored according to the IMCA points system and winners will be announced during the week.
