Special events highlight May stretch-run at Lee County Speedway By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (May 13) – If Mother Nature continues to cooperate, the run up to the month of June has the potential to be one of the most exciting stretches of the season at the Lee County Speedway. Appearances by the Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models will sandwich the inaugural appearance of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Winged Outlaw Warriors 360 Sprint Cars. Defending track champion Tom Darbyshire will lead the Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model charge into Donnellson this Friday night, May 16. The make-up event from April 25 will include all five weekly classes in addition to the Late Models. The Pepsi-sponsored 25-lap Draw/Redraw event will pay $800 to win, will additional dollars provided by Taylor Massner and Nick & Kerri Wilkerson. After a week hiatus, the IMCA Late Models will return on May 30 for their regularly scheduled appearance and another $800 to win, Draw/Redraw 25-lapper. Three additional promotions are on the schedule for Green Bay Motors and Harvest Moon Quilt Co. Night at the Races. The speedway will honor our armed forces as anyone showing Military ID will be admitted free for Armed Forces Appreciation Night. One lucky race fan from ages 5-17 will have an opportunity to win a Nintendo Wii gaming system. It will also be Thirsty Friday as all paid admissions receive their first drink free courtesy of Pepsi, Budweiser, and Miller Lite. Grandstand admission for May 16 is $10 for Adults (18-59), $9 for Seniors (60+), $7 for Students (11-17), and Free for Kids (10 and under). Pit passes are $20. Pit gates open at 5:30, with Hot Laps at 7pm and the first race at 7:30. The countdown is on to the inaugural Memorial Day Classic for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Winged Outlaw Warriors. Thus far, 74 different drivers have participated in the four events held in 2008. And to this point, outsiders have taken all four checkered flags. USAC star Jesse Hockett and all-time runner-up for series wins Brian Brown have taken WOW-sanctioned checkered flags, while Louisiana’s Jason Johnson and Oklahoma’s Aaron Berryhill topped ASCS co-sanctioned events. However, more of the same continues at the top of the WOW standings as 3-time, defending champion Randy Martin leads the way over young-guns Jonathan Cornell, Austin Alumbaugh, J Kinder, and Curtis Evans. 360 Sprint Car fans should mark Friday, May 23, on their calendars now. A final note to the week includes congratulations to Crystal Raker of Danville as she turned in the winning Fantasy Racing team for the week, with a score of 204, over Dakota Lynch.
