Johnson inherits Late Models while Gaylord & Fenton earn career firsts By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (May 30) – Jay Johnson crossed the finish line first to score his first Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model victory of 2008 during Fleck Sales Miller Lite Night at the Lee County Speedway. Johnson, driver of the Ideal Read Mix / J&J Steel / Chevrolet, inherited the lead from Tom Goble with two laps to go when the right rear tire folded under and forced Goble to retire. Dustin Griffin started on the front row and led early in the 25-lapper. Griffin and Denny Woodworth battled for the top spot, until Woodworth spun his mount into the infield and triggered the caution. Woodworth restarted and finished 10th. Goble made his move following the lap 8 restart and distanced himself from the field. The former Modified track champion was well on his way to scoring his first career Late Model victory, but that all turned south for the W. Burlington, Iowa driver coming to the white flag. Johnson controlled the restart and held off Griffin for the $800 payday ahead of Jason Frankel, Travis Smock, and Sam Halstead. Justin Reed and Johnson topped the Heats. Thad Gaylord led every lap of the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod feature and earned his first-ever trip to victory lane. Gaylord withstood challenges from Joe Hooper early and Mark Winkel late in the 15-lapper. Phillip Beard worked past Winkel coming to the stripe to claim second, while Winkel, Rob Kirchner, and Joe Hooper completed the top five. Winkel and Hooper won the Heat Races. Galesburg, Ill. veteran Dean McGee, Sr. put his Rheinschmidt’s Carpet Center / GRT Miller Lite IMCA Modified into victory circle for the second time in 2008. McGee worked around race-long leader Chris Larson with five laps remaining to score the win. Bill Roberts, Tyler Cale, and Adam Helmick rounded out the top five. Mike Weikert, Jr. and McGee scored wins in Heat Race action. Dean Kratzer extended his Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature win streak to 4 and made a run from the tail for the second victory in a row. Kratzer was forced to restart on the tail after contact on the opening lap. The Lawson Racing / Jean Kratzer Avon / Chevrolet methodically worked to the front and joined Derek St. Clair and Rob Wilsey’s lead battle at the five-to-go signal. Kratzer earned the win, while Dan Wenig, Jeff Soper, Derek St. Clair, and Jon Rooney ended the event in the top five. Wilsey and Wenig topped the Heat Races. Dustan Fenton became another first-time winner in Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing action. Fenton started on the front and stayed there, beating Jim Oliver, III and Rob Hammel to the line. Brent Hartley and Chuck Fullenkamp had top five nights. Dan Keltner and Bryan Rodefer won in Heat Race action. Next week, a full night of racing is on tap during Farmers & Merchants Mutual Telephone Company Night at the Races. A Candy Dash sponsored by Weikert Iron & Metal and a Hobby Stock Rookie Rally is on tap along with regular racing for the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing program. Gates open at 5:30, while the first green flag drops at 7:30. For more information, consult www.leecountyspeedway.com .
