Pilot Grove Savings Bank Mid-Season Championships to McGee, Oliver, Jr., Mueller, Timmerman, Gillenwater By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (June 20) - Three repeat winners and a pair of first-timer winners graced victory circle during the Pilot Grove Savings Bank Mid-Season Championships at the Lee County Speedway. Galesburg, Ill. driver Dean McGee, Sr. took the long way around to get to Donnellson from the Illinois side of the river and then took the short way around the 3/8-mile to claim his third A-Feature victory and move into the points lead. McGee had to deal with one of the hottest drivers in Southeast Iowa in Tyler Cale after a lap 15 restart but the Rheinschmidt’s Carpet Center / Cherry Street Guitar / Gustaf / GRT stuck to the line of moisture and scored the race win. Cale and Josh Foster staged a heated battle for second with Cale coming out on top and Foster slipping to sixth at the finish. Kevin Cale finished third, while Brandon Savage and another flood-detoured driver Mike Weikert, Jr. completed the top five. Tyler Cale and Adam Helmick won in Heat Race action. John Oliver, Jr. of Danville made his first Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock start of 2008 and cruised to the race win in his Oliver Tri-County Heating and Air-sponsors Buick after overtaking Rodger Dresden midway through the 15-lapper. However, Dean Kratzer’s broken trailing arm will roll over and increase the $400 bounty to next week’s event. Rob Wilsey, Doug Fenton, Dan Wenig, and Tanner Thomann rounded out the top five in the 27-car field. Jim Lynch, Jake Wenig, Dresden, and Wilsey took Heat Race wins. Mt. Pleasant’s Jeff Mueller took the lead early on and was never challenged during the 15-lap Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature. The race was for second as Abe Huls worked around Jim Redman to pick up the runner-up spot. Australian Pursuit winner and 1999 Track Champ Dave Hemsted finished fourth, while Dennis Harwood finished a season-best fifth. Doug Huls, Oliver, Jr., and Redman copped Heat Race victories. The Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Things got a surprise as they entered the racing surface from staging. The 12-lap event was staged in reverse direction around the 3/8-mile and the direction change produced a first-time winner. Wapello’s Devon Timmerman led every lap from the pole position to score his career-first Wild Thing feature win. Dustan Fenton finished second well back of race-winner Timmerman. Jim Oliver, III, Bryan Rodefer, and Rob Hammel ended the event in the top 5. Brent Hartley, Wayne Noble, and Oliver won the Heat Races. Jim Gillenwater dominated the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod 15-lapper. The Keokuk, Iowa driver was unchallenged after battling a handful of mid-race restarts. Joe Hooper crossed the line second, with Bob Jennings, Phillip Cossel, and Josh Larson in tow. Chad Sovern, Rod Staats, and Hooper earned Heat Race victories. Next Week, the Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models return to the Lee County Speedway for their third of five appearances. The $800 to win 25-lapper will be the first Point Average show of 2008 for the Late Models. The Wild Things will take the night off.
