Cale, Huls, Oliver, Sr., and Hammel celebrate Liberty Cup triumph By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (July 3) - A packed house and 119 racecars filled the pit area during the 1st Annual Pepsi Liberty Cup at the Lee County Speedway. Even with a few outside invaders in the pits, the big money stayed relatively close to home. IMCA Vice President Brett Root put some extra cash on the line for the Modifieds and Stock Cars, offering a guaranteed $100 for the first driver to take the challenge to start at the back of the feature and bonuses making each feature $2,000 to win. Tyler Cale of Donnellson redrew the front row and led all 35 laps and collected $1,500, the largest payday of his young career. Cale and pole starter Rich Smith dueled early on until Smith faded and pulled pitside. Points leader Dean McGee shadowed Cale for the entire distance but never was able to mount a challenge. Vinton, Iowa, veteran Scott Hogan raced to third from the B-Main on the high side. Josh Foster and Billy Roberts rounded out the top five. Front row challenger Jason Murray was caught up in an early accident and never got a chance to get going. The Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars stole the show. Darin Thye, Abe Huls, and Jason Cook battled at the front while front row challenger Jeff Mueller methodically worked his way through the 23-car field from the tail in search of $2,000. With 10 to go in the 25-lapper, Thye began to show a smoke trail behind his car. Huls seized the opportunity on a lap 22 restart and pulled off his largest career payday. Mueller raced by a slowing Thye on the final lap, dove underneath Huls, and came up a half car length shy of the impossible. Mueller received a standing ovation in victory lane for his efforts. Former track champ Jason Cook eeked out third ahead of Thye’s disabled mount. John Oliver, Jr. rounded out the top five. John Oliver, Sr. earned a $1,040 winner’s prize in a caution-plagued, time shortened Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature. Only 9 of a scheduled 20 laps were completed before the checkered flag was displayed. Rodger Dresden began to mount a challenge before the race was called and finished second. Justin Hamelton, Brian Holmes, and John Oliver, Jr. completed the top five. Dean Kratzer worked from 24th to 6th after earning the final transfer spot in the B-Main. Rob Hammel drew the pole and led all 15-laps of the Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing feature. Hammel was unchallenged en route to the $300 check. Tyler Schulte was credited in second after Travis DeMint failed post-race inspection. Nathan Chandler, Jim Oliver, III, and Brad Chandler finished in the top five. Next week, the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds and the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks will race for points during the annual running of the Lee County Fair. The 360 Sprint Cars will also make their return to the 3/8-mile. In two weeks, the IMCA Late Models will make their third appearance of 2008.
