Schulz, Foster, Wenig score Lee County Fair Grand Championships By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (July 11) - W. Burlington’s John Schulz took the lead on an early restart and blasted past Sikeston, Mo’s Jerrod Hull to cruise to the Lee County Fair Grand Championship Sprint Car feature win. Only 9 of the 18 starters finished on the lead lap of the 25-lapper. The win was the first in several seasons for Schulz at the 3/8-mile fairgrounds. Hull battled Matt Rogerson until clearing him for good in traffic. Bobby Mincer climbed to third after starting 15th. Rogerson faded to fourth, while Jordan Goldesberry completed the top five. Montrose’s Josh Foster found the heavy surface to his liking and put his Five Star Drywall / Chevy into the Miller Lite IMCA Modified winner’s circle. Foster withstood challenges during the 20-lapper from Brandon Rothzen en route to the victory. Rothzen scored his best 2008 finish in second, while points leader Dean McGee, Sr., Lonne Heap, and Jim Redmann followed the lead duo across the line. Middletown’s Jake Wenig claimed his second Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature of the season. Keokuk’s Brandon Symmonds showed Wenig his nose several times but was unable to make the pass and came home in second – his best showing of the season. Doug Fenton debuted a new racecar in third, with Jim Lynch and Matt Tucker, in his first appearance of 2008, finished in the top five. Next week, the Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models will try again as they battle themselves and Mother Nature. Two of the original five dates have fallen to rain and rain dates are becoming scarce. Grandstand admission is $10 for Adults (18-59), $9 for Seniors (60+), $7 for Students (11-17), and Free for Kids (10 and under). The Thirsty Friday promotion will continue as all paid admissions will receive their first drink free courtesy of Budweiser, Miller Lite, and Pepsi.
