Hobby Stock photo finish highlights Access Energy Night at Lee County Speedway By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (July 25) – The headline will read “Dean Kratzer takes sixth win of 2008,” but the story was the way in which he earned the 15-lap Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock main event at the Lee County Speedway. Kratzer led for most of the race until Lomax, Ill. driver Matt Tucker found the right combination to slip past Kratzer with just three laps remaining. But Tucker pushed up the racetrack, allowing the driver of the Lawson Racing Engines & Parts Supply / Jean Kratzer Avon / Buick to return the favor by the narrowest of margins at the start/finish line. It was no more than the width of a bumper cover, but it was enough for Kratzer, who moves back into the points lead. Dan Wenig, Rodger Dresden, and Justin Hamelton finished in the top five. Chad Sovern was the benefactor of an early-race tangle in the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod 15-lapper. Early on, it was a three-car tussle between Sovern, and points leaders Jim Gillenwater and Joe Hooper. However, contact between Hooper and Gillenwater sent both tailback and gave Sovern some much needed breathing room. Sovern cruised the rest of the way, but Gillenwater and Hooper sliced their way back through the 23-car field. Gillenwater claimed second at the line ahead of Mark Winkel, early leader Phillip Cossel, and Jerad Fuller. Jeff Mueller inherited the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car 15-lapper after both Nick Fenton and Jason Cook faltered while leading. Several cautions plagued the early stages of the event and Fenton appeared to be in control as he is still in search of his first career event win. Disaster struck for Fenton as he looped it in front of the field, handing the lead over to Cook. One lap after the restart, Cook retired with oil pressure issues. Mueller had to hold of a hungry Dave Hemsted on the final turn and was able to pull out the victory. Hemsted slid across the line in second, while John Oliver, Jr, Chris Webb, and Fenton followed Mueller across the line. Josh Foster proved the man to beat early and often as the Montrose, Iowa driver closed the Miller Lite IMCA Modified gap to one point after his race win in the 20-lapper. Kevin Cale held off Rich Smith for second in an event that was slowed by only one caution. Chris Larson had one of his best runs of 2008 in fourth. Points leader Dean McGee, Sr. tore the left front suspension off the car in hot laps and had an up-and-down night which was salvaged with a fifth place run. Brent Hartley gave up the lead to Jim Oliver, III with a handful of laps remaining in the Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing 12-lapper but Oliver, III slowed and Hartley went on to score his first career Wild Thing victory. Hartley picked up $200 for his efforts courtesy of Shelly Keltner. Dustan Fenton inherited second after Oliver, III’s troubles but was never able to mount a challenge for the lead. Wayne Noble, Devon Timmerman, and Rob Hammel rounded out the top five. Next week, all five weekly classes continue their chase for the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing program championships. In addition, a $500 to win 25-lap Figure 8 race will follow the racing action. Race time is 7:30 on Friday, August 1. Sport Modifieds A-Main 01 -- 1. Chad Sovern, West Point; 2.
