Rothzen breaks through for career-first IMCA Modified victory; Cook and
Redman put on Stock Car thriller
By Jake Croxton
DONNELLSON, IA (Aug. 1) – Brandon Rothzen withstood late-race challenges
from Rob Kirchner and pulled away to score his first career Miller Lite IMCA
Modified feature win. Rothzen has been so close so many times in his brief
Modified career and the Media, Ill. driver finally put everything together
and took home the top prize. It was nearly all for naught as Donnellson’s
Rob Kirchner drew alongside on a lap 17 restart, but Rothzen held him off.
After a stuck throttle in the heat race, Darin Thye came from deep in the
pack to nip Tyler Cale at the line for second – his best Donnellson finish
of the season. Mike Weikert, Jr. and Jeff Waterman filled out the top five.
Jason Cook and Jim Redman starred in another Budweiser IMCA Stock Car
classic as the lead duo traded slide jobs five times in the final four laps
of the 15-lapper. Cook copped his third race win of 2008 and the energetic
driver accepted congratulations from Redman in victory lane. John Oliver,
Jr., Dave Hemsted, and Cale Samberg followed Cook and Redman across the
line.
Brandon Symmonds worked past Jim Oliver, Jr. and earned his first trip to
the winner’s circle in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock 15-lapper. Symmonds
made the move late in the going after nearly picking up the race win a week
ago. Matt Tucker, Dean Kratzer, and Jeff Soper rounded out the top five.
Chris Loring, Jr. led the entire 12-lap Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing
feature. Loring, Jr. was able to hold off Chuck Fullenkamp to pick up his
first win of 2008. Dustan Fenton, Don DeMint, and Josh Green finished in the
top five.
Jim Gillenwater survived the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod
feature, which was shortened to 8 laps due to the time limit. Scott Boles
led early, but had to settle for a runner-up finish. Joe Hooper, Phillip
Cossel, and Jerad Fuller followed Gillenwater to the finish.
Keith Reed - after completing the program with the Hobby Stocks - and Chuck
Fullenkamp – in a 4-cylinder car – each took home the Discount Tire &
Service and Borders Heating & Air Figure 8 championships. A large turnout of
27-cars graced the 3/8-mile in two 20-lap races.
Next week, the Lee County Speedway will be silent – no races on Aug. 8. The
IMCA Late Models return on Aug. 15. The IMCA Modifieds will take the night
off.
