Steward cashes in for $1,500 big ones in Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Spectacular By Jake Croxton DONNELLSON, IA (Sept. 20) - West Burlington, Iowa’s Donnie Steward cashed in on the largest payday of 2008 for the 305 Sprint Cars at the Lee County Speedway, scoring the race win in the 25-lap Sebastian Sandblasting & Powder Coating 305 Sprint Car Spectacular. Steward took the lead on a late restart after Indianola’s Johnny Anderson retired prior to taking the green flag. Anderson had worked to the front during the opening half of the event, which was marred by several cautions and two red flags. Okoboji’s Ryan Voss brought his #3D home in second, while Justin Gianetto, Justin Newberry, and Dustin Clark rounded out the top five. With Joe Hooper and Jim Gillenwater on the sideline early in the 20-lap Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod feature, a new face found victory circle. Farmington’s Mike Browning worked past Quincy’s Adam Birck with five laps remaining and enjoyed the spotlight, receiving a $100 bonus from Farmington Tax Service in victory circle. Beau Taylor, Phillip Cossel, and Bob Woodrow followed the lead duo across the line. Pleasant Hill, Illinois, driver Justin Buchholz dominated the 15-lap Mod Lite feature. Buchholz was challenged by Des Moines’ Joel Huggins, but held on for the race win. Jeff Stensland, D. J. Schmatereid, and Matt Kennedy completed the top five. Several drivers escaped injury, including Benny Burnett, after his car flipped while running fourth in feature action. Another accident in the second heat race took out five cars, three of which ended upside down, and soaked the inside of turn two with fuel. At last report, all drivers involved were uninjured or refused treatment. Dennis Schulte returned to LCS for a little fun and picked up the Shottenkirk Part Express Wild Thing 12-lapper in caution-free fashion. Randy Foor led early and looked to have the race well in hand, but Schulte methodically erased the deficit and brought Rob Hammel through with him to second. Chris Loring, Jr. and Jim Oliver, III raced to top five finishes. Next up for the Lee County Speedway will be the Thunder in the Heartland Challenge in two weeks on Saturday, October 4.
