Wet Around The Edges, Shiverfest Closes Out the 2008 Season
at Lee County Speedway
DONNELLSON, IA (Oct 25) -After nearly an inch of rain on Friday the Lee
County Speedway in Donnellson picked up just enough sun and wind to allow
the track crew to pack things in. And a nice crowd to came out to watch more
than 170 racecars participate in the 10th Annual Shiverfest Saturday night.
The Sport Mods were the first class up for feature racing on the night and
it was a pair of #4’s up front early as Scott Boles gave up the lead to Tony
Dunker on lap two. As the battle waged on behind him Dunker pulled away to a
commanding lead and picked up the victory over Mark Winkel, Chris Stein,
Chad Sovern and Brian Schrage. The twenty-lap finale for the Stock Cars
turned into a race for survival as only nine of the twenty-four starters
made it to the checkered flag. Mike VanGenderen was looking to make it two
wins in a row at this event only to have mechanical issues sideline him
after he lead the first ten laps. Matt Greiner picked up the lead from there
and then held back a late charge from Erick Knutsen to earn the victory.
Jason Cook came home third with Kirk Kinsley and Jeff Joldersma rounding out
the top five.
The Modifieds drew the highest car count of the night with forty-five and
their twenty-lap main event featured a thrilling battle for the lead between
three of the top drivers in the state of Iowa. Wayne Struchen paced the
field for the first six laps, but Bruce Hanford, Todd Shute and Jeremy Mills
were charging hard to the front after starting ninth, twelfth and thriteenth
respectively. Hanford snared the lead on lap seven and then had to fight off
the challenges of both Shute and Mills who were often side-by-side just a
car length back from the leader. Wyatt Lantz and Jeremy Harris completed the
top five.
The Hobby Stocks had a tough time getting a lap in during their feature
race, but once they did the race for the front was a good one as Doug Fenton
eased past Brian Howerton with six laps remaining to earn the win. Howerton
was the runner-up ahead of Derek St. Clair, Rob Wilsey and Dale Porter. The
night, and the 2008 racing season in the upper Midwest, came to a close when
twenty-four Four Cylinder “Wild Things” hit the track. The remaining fans in
the stands were treated to another exciting three-car battle for the top
spot as Brannon Bechen eased past Chuck Fullenkamp late to take the win.
Shane Kelly was right there looking for racing room in third while Irv
Fossaen and Brad Chandler round out the top five.
With the support of sponsors, drivers and fans, Shiverfest raised over
$1,500 for the individuals and families who are battling kidney disease at
the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units in Mt. Pleasant, Keokuk, Fort Madison and
Burlington. Area sponsors who made direct contributions to the dialysis
units included KILJ Radio, Hagge Insurance, Casebine Credit Union, Becker’s
Jewelers, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Mike Henderson-Edward Jones Investments, Access
Energy Cooperative & Access Energy Propane, Mt. Pleasant Tire & Service,
Balzer Incorporated, the Mt. Pleasant Hy-Fee Food Store and Boles Auto
Sales.
