By Jake Croxton – jakecroxton@yahoo.com

FT. MADISON, Iowa (Jan. 26) – Drivers and fans celebrated the culmination of the 2007 Lee County Speedway season in style at the annual Awards Banquet, held at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Fort Madison, Iowa. Among those honored were champions Tom Darbyshire (Morning Sun – IMCA Late Model), Kevin Cale (Donnellson – IMCA Modified), Jeff Mueller (Mt. Pleasant – IMCA Stock Car), Jeff Waterman (Quincy, IL – B-Modified), Doug Fenton (Burlington – Hobby Stock), and Travis DeMint (Basco, IL – Wild Thing).

The party lasted well into the night after each respective champion took center stage, but not before several special awards were handed out. The Rookies of
the Year in each class were Mitch Higdon (Ft. Madison – IMCA Modified), Nick Fenton (Mt. Pleasant – IMCA Stock Car), Bill Seyb (Donnellson – B-Modified), Derek St. Clair (Keokuk – Hobby Stock) and Jeremy Pundt (Donnellson – Wild Thing). Each of the 34 drivers that earned perfect attendance (including the banquet) received a pit voucher for 2008. Perhaps the most excited banquet attendee was Abe Huls as the Carthage, Ill. driver won a free IMCA Stock Car License for 2008, courtesy of IMCA Vice President Brett Root.

Promoters Terry and Jenni Hoenig also recognized those individuals who were a part of all ten seasons with them at LCS. Those sponsors, drivers, officials, or combination of the prior criteria were: Shottenkirk GM Giant, Jim Gillenwater, KOKX & KRNQ Radio, Dick & Deanna Reu – Wood’s Wrecker Service, Cossel Racing, Lee County Bank & Trust, Paul & Amber Lawson, Lee County Fair Board, Bruce & Tara Thuleen, Lee County EMS, Gariann Mickelson, Golden Eagle Distributing, Pilot Grove Savings Bank, Donnellson Tire & Service, Rick & Sharon Huff, Dennis & Vicki Harwood, Nancy Eads, Harry & Linda Hoenig, Jimmie & Jaime Sykes, and the Donnellson Volunteer Fire Department.

Arguably, the most exciting revelation capped off the evening as it was confirmed that NASCAR driver and former USAC Triple Crown winner J.J. Yeley would
appear in competition during Budweiser Night on Wednesday, June 18. The event card will include the second of two appearances by the O’Reilly Auto Parts
Winged Outlaw Warriors, a 360 Sprint Car touring series based in Missouri.

Other events on the preliminary schedule include five dates for the Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models. The five-race series saw five competitors with a shot at
the championship on the final night a year ago. The Winged Outlaw Warriors will appear on Friday, May 23. On Thursday, July 3, the First Annual Liberty Cup will
showcase the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Wild Things. Modified competitors will race for a $1,500 top prize, while the Stock Cars will battle for $1,000 to win. The Mid-America 305 Winged Sprints are scheduled for September 20. A $500 to win Figure 8 Race and a Toy Drive during Christmas in July Night also line the tentative schedule.
