Burgtorf, Long, Cook, Gaylord, Fenton get night one wins

DONNELLSON, Iowa (April 24) – The 2009 racing season opened in fine fashion at Lee County Speedway Friday night with the Pepsi opener featuring the Pilot Grove Savings Bank/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model “Driver for Five.”

Five classes saw action on the fast 3/8 mile dirt oval, including the Pilot Grove Savings Bank/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models, Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds, Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars, Lawson Racing Engine and Parts Supply IMCA Sport Mods and Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks.

Mark Burgtorf continued his early season success in the IMCA late model division as he took his third win of the 2009 season picking up the $1,000 cash prize. Tom Darbyshire led the first 21 laps of the 25-lap event, before Burgtorf found a way by in lapped traffic. There was a spirited battle between the two for several laps before Burgtorf used the low line and a lapped car to find his way around Darbyshire. Jason Frankel, Terry Schlipman and Curt Martin round out the top five respectively, in the 33 car field for the first night of the “Drive for Five.”

Thad Gaylord picked up the closest win of the night when he held of a late charge from Todd Holman, who made a hard last lap charge. The two crossed the start/finish line side-by-side. Gaylord led the 15 lap feature from the beginning but spent much of the last 10 laps fighting off the advances of Holman. Phillip Cossel who started deep in the field finished third, while Jacob Smith finished fourth in just his second race in a in the class.

In the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature event, Doug Fenton picked up the first win of the season at Lee County Speedway, as he started out front and led every lap on the way to the win. The racing in the feature was for the second spot as a trio of cars spent the last half the race battling for the runner-up spot. At the end of the night Rob Wilsey was second and Derek St. Clair took home the third spot. Nathan Wood and Brent Hartley rounded out the top 5.

The new team of Jim Gillenwater and Michael Long opened the season in impressive fashion, as Long piloted the Gillenwater owned machine to a victory in the Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature event. Long, who started deep in the field, took just three laps to find his way to the front. While, he didn’t dominate the event, he was never really threatened down the stretch. The battle for position was behind Long, as Nate Caruth, Josh Foster and Tyler Cale put up a heated fight for the second spot. Each of the three took their turn running in the second spot, before finishing Caruth, Foster and Cale in that order. Rich Smith came on to take the fifth spot.

Jason Cook picked up right where he left off the 2008 season as he won the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car event at Lee County Speedway. Cook, who was scheduled to start in the ninth spot, was given a gift before the race even technically started, as three cars in front of him in the inside row either left the track or were sent to the back. Cook was then on the inside of row two. Abe Huls led the early stages before spinning in turn 3, which gave the lead to Cook on the second lap. Cook had to hold off several pass attempts from Jeff Mueller, who eventually finished second. John Oliver, Jr. was third and Huls came back to finish fourth. Chris Webber rounded out the top five.

Friday, May 1 is Green Bay Motors and Harvest Moon Quilt Company night at the races, as well as Donnellson, Montrose, Argyle and Farmington Community Night. All citizens of those communities can come to the races for free by simply showing their ID. Pit gates open at 5:30 p.m., hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
