Wenig takes win on give-away night at Lee CountyDresden, Goble, Strothman, Long, Oliver also get victories

By Dewain Hulett of Lee County Speedway

DONNELLSON, Iowa (July 17, 2009) – Family Motors gave a car away Friday night at Lee County Speedway, and owner Dan Wenig took one to victory lane as well, as he was one of six drivers to pick up feature wins.
Tom Goble won an exciting IMCA Late Model feature, while Rodger Dresden, Michael Long, James Oliver, III, and Corey Strothman also picked up feature wins.

After giving away a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT during intermission, Wenig went to work in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature event. He took the lead from his sixth starting spot on lap 7 and led the final 9 circuits en route to the win. Some mechanical issues made the race close down the stretch, but he was able to hold off Brandon Symmonds, Ray Raker, Derek St. Clair and Jim Lynch who finished the top five respectively.

Strothman started on the pole and withstood a serious amount of last lap harassment from Jason Cook to pick up his first career Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature win. Cook started eighth and found his way to second with enough time to beat on Strothman a little down the stretch, but had to settle for second. Aaron Brockseick was third, while John Oliver, Jr., was fourth and Abe Huls was fifth.

It was the first Lee County Speedway feature win for Goble, who avenged a late race mechanical failure which cost him a feature win at the track last year. After starting seventh, Goble took the lead in the middle stages of the event and looked to have the race in hand before a lapped car nearly cost him another win. Jeff Aikey took advantage and actually had a lead down the backstretch on lap 24, but Goble muscled back and held on for the win. Aikey settled for second, while Jay Johnson was third. Mark Burgtorf finished forth and Tony Fraise came home fifth.

Dresden and Phillip Cossel spent much of the late stages of the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply IMCA Sport Mod feature event running side-by-side for the lead. Cossel was on the low side and Dresden was on the high. Dresden was able to get by to lead the final two laps, after starting 12th. Cossel, who started 10th, would settle for second, followed by Rick Barlow, Jr., Jason Cook and Rod Staats who rounded out the top five.

In the Feinberg Metal Recycling Wild Things feature event, it was much of the same as Oliver, III, took the lead quickly from his outside row four starting spot and was never challenged for the win. CJ Loring, Jerry Ostby, Dakota Fenton and William Michel rounded out the top five.

In the Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature event, Long took the lead on lap 12 and never looked back, running away to an easy win. Again, however, the racing was behind him, Josh Foster worked hard to get from 12th to second, while Rich Smith, who started eighth finished third. Wyatt Lantz finished fourth and Bill Roberts was fifth.

Friday, July 24, is Elder Implement Night and Summy Tire and Auto Service Night at Lee County Speedway, with all six classes of cars competing again. Fans don’t forget if you where John Deere attire you can get in for half-price. July 29, is Budweiser/Big Country 103.1 KDMG Night with 360 Sprint Cars and Vintage cars, as well as Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks and Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars.
