Fraise gets first IMCA Late Model
win at
Lee
County
Rich Smith, Harrison get first feature wins of season
By Dewain Hulett
DONNELLSON, Iowa (July 24, 2009) – For most people, when they heard Tony
Fraise was moving to an IMCA Late Model for the 2009, it wasn’t a matter of
time of if he could win, but when he would win.
Well the when came with a win Friday at Lee County Speedway, during Elder
Implement Night and Summy Tire and Auto Night.
Rich Smith (Miller Lite Modifieds) and Gabe Harrison (Feinberg Metal
Recycling Wild Things) also picked up their first feature wins of the
season. Derek St.
Clair, Jacob Smith and Jeff Mueller also got feature wins.
After a long and storied career in a modified, Fraise decided to race a late
model in the 2009 season, after the announcement of the Pilot Grove Savings
Bank/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model Drive for Five series at Lee County.
The cars may be different, but he has got it figured out now, as he ran away
with the win. Tom Goble, who won last week and has also got is 2009 season
headed in the right direction, settle for second.
Rich Smith, who has all kinds of distractions during this racing season, had
another good run Friday night, but this ended one spot farther forward than
it has all season long, as he picked up the Miller Lite IMCA Modified
feature win. After starting 10th, he found himself in a tight
battle for the lead with Josh Foster as the two got to the front on lap
seven. They switched the lead back and forth four times before Rich Smith
was able to finally take the checkered flag in the 18-lap time shortened
event.
Harrison, who had one stolen away from him earlier in the season, also got
is first win, as he took the lead and held off some late advances to get the
victory. Seith Woodruff led early, but
Harrison took control to get the win, while
Kimberly Abbott and Dakota Fenton came from deep in the field to finish
second and third respectively. Abbott started 17th, while Fenton
was in the 20th spot at the start of the event.
In what was the closest finish of the night, Jacob Smith beat Rodger Dresden
at the stripe to pick up the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply IMCA
Sport Mod feature win. He led every lap, and with five to go, looked like he
had it in the bag, but a late charge by
Dresden made it close. He nipped
Dresden by less than a foot at the
start finish line.
St. Clair took the lead of the Donnellson
Tire Hobby Stock feature on lap eight and never looked back en route to his
easiest win of the season, though he did have a pair of Wenig’s trying to
reel him in late in the race. It was St. Clair’s fourth feature win of the
season at
Lee
County and his third
points win. Jake Wenig held of Dan Wenig down the stretch, as the pair
finished second and third respectively.
Mueller made a snoozer of the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature event, as he
took the lead on lap nine and was never challenged the rest of the way.
Corey Strothman had another strong run as he finished in the second spot
after leading early. Aaron Brockseick finished in the third spot, while
Jason cook was fourth.
An extra night of racing is on the agenda this week, as Lee County Speedway
host Budweiser and Big Country 103.1 Night at the races Wednesday, July 29.
It is Luau Night at the races and people who wear a bikini get in for half
price. The Budweiser Hospitality tent will be set up for a party all night
long! The show will feature 360 Sprint Cars, IMCA Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks
and Vintage Cars. Hot Laps are at 7 p.m., racing is 7:30 p.m.
