Local Race Track Pitches in to Help in Time of Need

DONNELLSON, IA (October 1) - Track owners/promoters, Terry & Jenni Hoenig, are asking race fans, drivers, and crews to help “Gather a Harvest” of food this weekend at the races. With the need for food items at the local food pantries ever growing the Lee County Speedway is reaching out to help.

The speedway is offering a discounted ticket price to all race fans that bring food items to donate this Saturday night, Oct. 3rd in Donnellson, Iowa. Race fans that bring 2 or more non perishable food items this Saturday will be offered a $5 dollar grandstand admission ticket. That is half off the regular adult ticket price of $10 that would normally be charged for the night’s events.

“The idea came to me when my wife and I were watching the news on TV that was covering the growing need at the local food pantries” quoted Hoenig, “I found myself asking, How can we help?” The Lee County Speedway hosts a couple other community minded promotions like Christmas in July, which gathers toys for Lee County’s Project Child as well as the upcoming 11th Annual Shiverfest Race which raises funds that are donated to the local Renal Dialysis Units in Burlington, Fort Madison, Keokuk, & Mt. Pleasant. “Our race fans & drivers are such giving people,” Hoenig continued, “It seems that they really take pride in coming together to make a difference in our community.

We are so lucky to be able to draw them together to make such contributions. It is really hard for one or two people to make a dent in the overall need but when we bring everyone’s efforts together at once we can really make an impact.”

There are 5 classes of racing action this Saturday night including Sprint Cars, Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Wild Things with special Australian Pursuit races planned for 4 of the divisions.

The gates open at 5:00PM and the race program gets underway at 7:00PM sharp.
