Long lays ‘Smackdown’ at
Lee
County
By Dewain Hulett
DONNELLSON,
Iowa (April 17, 2010) – The “Modified
Smackdown” was appropriately named, as it turns out, as Michael Long,
Quincy,
Ill., put the “smackdown” on the
rest of the field en route to what turned out to be over a $2,500 payday at
Lee County Speedway, Saturday.
Long took the lead from Rich
Smith, who eventually finished second and took home over $2,000, on lap 22
and never looked back, dominating the late stages of the race.
In other feature action,
Phillip Cossel took the lead from early race leader Joe Bliven mid-way
through the IMCA Sport Mod feature event and held on for the feature win.
Derek Kirkland, Hobby
Stocks, and James Oliver, III, Wild Things, also picked up feature wins on
the opening night of the 2010 season at Lee County Speedway.
With lap money for leading
each lap, or running second, in the IMCA Modified feature event, Smith
compiled 21 laps at $30 per lap, and then finished the race with 14 more
laps at $10, per lap. Long didn’t fair quite as well in the lap money
category, but did manage to bring in over $500 in lap money, including 14
laps leading the event.
Josh Foster had a solid run
to finish third, while Scott Hogan and Mark Elliott rounded out the top
five.
In the Sport Mods, Bliven
led early, only to see his car push up the racetrack and allow Cossel under
for the lead and the eventual win. Cossel was never seriously threatened
after taking the lead.
Bliven would eventually
finish third on the racetrack, but following a disqualification of the
second place car, he was be awarded second place.
Kurt Hogan was third, Cayden
Carter was fourth and Thad Gaylord rounded out the top five.
Kirland took the lead early
in the Hobby Stock feature and then held off some serious challenges during
the latter stages of the event. Jake Wenig and Dan Wenig both pushed the
eventual winner in the late stages, before both lost control going through
turns one and two for the last time. Both finished but lost several spots.
Jim Lynch, Donnellson, took
advantage and finished in the second spot, while Andy Coleman, Packwood, was
third. Dale Porter, Pulaski, was fourth and Jake Wenig rounded out the top
five.
Oliver dominated throughout
in the Wild Things feature event, and was never challenged for the win.
Jerry Ostby was second, while John Helenthal rounded out the top three.
