Samberg gets first Lee County Stock Car win Smith holds off Foster, celebrates birthday with Modified win
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (July 16, 2010) – Cale Samberg took off early in the IMCA Stock Car race, Friday at Lee County Speedway, then held off late charges from Matt Greiner and other to pick up his first career feature win at Lee County Speedway.

After a pair of back-to-back second place finishes Rich Smith was able to hold of Josh Foster for an IMCA Modified feature win, while Phillip Cossel got an IMCA Sport Mods victory. Dean Kratzer celebrated a Hobby Stocks feature win, while Nick Wilkerson picked up a Wild Things victory.

Samberg, who said he has struggled at Lee County in 2010, was very happy to get the monkey of his back with the Stock Car win. He made it look relatively easy, as he ran away early and held on late for the victory. Greiner finished second, Derek St. Claire was third and Jeff Mueller was fourth.

On a late race restart, Smith had Foster tucked in behind him in second place, it was a site that has been very common during the 2010 season, especially of late. This time, however, Smith was able to hold Foster off to get the win. Smith ran high in three and four and low in one and two and was able to keep Foster in second place at the finish. It was a big win for Smith, who if not for Foster, would be the one everyone was talking about for having a great year at Lee County. Jeff Waterman, Jeff Gerhardt and Wyatt Lantz rounded out the top five respectively.

Cossel had struggled of late in the new #15 machine, but Friday night he got it figured out as he dominated the Sport Mods feature event on the way to the win. Jason Cook came from deep in the field to finish second, while Rod Staats had another good run to finish third. Rodger Dresden was fourth and Mitch Higdon was fifth.

In the Hobby Stock feature it was the usual suspects at the front when the checkered flag fell, as Kratzer got the win. Jake Wenig made it close at the end but had to settle for second, while Matt Tucker finished in the final podium position. Tanner Thomann and Dan Wenig rounded out the top five respectively.

Wilkerson has been playing around the last year or so in Wild Things competition, he finally bought his own car last week. Friday, he drove it to victory lane. After spending all week getting it ready, the work paid off with the victory. He came from deep in the field to get the win, as he was followed across the stripe by Jerry Ostby in second and Gabe Harrison. Rex Smart had his best run of the season in fourth and Bill Michel finished in the fifth spot.

Racing action returns, Friday, to Lee County Speedway with Dennis Woodworth Attorney at Law Night, including the return of the IMCA Late Models. All six classes will be in action, and it is Christmas in July. If fans and racers are able they are asked to bring and unused and unwrapped new toy to donate. All the toys will be donated to Lee County Project Child.
