Sherbon wins Steve Kirchner Memorial at LCS Solid Sport Mods field signs in to honor former LCS B-Mod driver
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (AUGUST 2, 2010) – With added money in the purse and lap money on the line 27 IMCA Sport Mods signed in to compete for the Steve Kirchner Memorial at Lee County Speedway, Friday.

Dylan Book drew the pole and led the first six laps, before eventual race winner Josh Sherbon got around him to complete lap 7 with the lead. It wasn’t over yet, however, as a group of cautions allowed Book to size up Sherbon for the final restart.

As the field came to a restart for a green-white-checkered finish, Book guessed nearly perfectly and took Sherbon’s inside into turn one and led lap 19. Sherbon did not give up though and retook the lead on the final circuit, winning by a comfortable two car lengths at the stripe. Mike Shelton finished third, while Derek Coleman was fourth and Mitch Higdon was fifth.

The Modified feature was a good one as well, as Jim Lynch picked up the win, but not without a lot of excitement leading to the victory. Lynch started 11th and used the cushion up top to run where no one else was, as he came through the field.

On lap 15 Lynch had caught third place running Rich Smith and as he tried to pass on the high side the two got together and Lynch got hard into the outside guardrail. As Smith attempted to recover he came into contact with Brandon Rothzen who was running second and coming down the track to make a run at the race leader Brand Savage. Rothzen spun bringing out the caution.

On the restart Lynch again went to the outside and flew past Smith and Savage to take the lead and control the final six laps en route to the win. Smith would settle for second, while Bill Roberts had a strong run up to third. Dean McGee, Sr., continued his upsurge of late as well, finishing fourth, while Rob Kirchner rounded out the top five.

Jason Cook dominated the final two-thirds of the IMCA Stock feature, after passing Nathan Wood on lap six he led the rest of the way to get the win. Wood finished second, followed by Matt Greiner, Cale Samberg and Corey Strothman.

It was Family Motors night and Jake Wenig took his Family Motors Special to victory lane, only to have the power plant claimed following the race. Nonetheless, it was a good run for the youngest Wenig, who started 12th. Matt Tucker followed Wenig for much of the final stages of the race, including a couple restarts, but could not do anything with the race winner. Third spot went to Dan Wenig, while Larry McConnell was fourth and Tanner Thomann, fifth.

In the Wild Things feature, Jerry Ostby won his second straight feature, as he passed CJ Loring on lap 10 of the 12 lap race to get the victory. Loring would hold on for second, while Nick Wilkerson came to third, followed by Gabe Harrison and Bill Michel.

This Friday, August 6, is Trump Trucks Night, as the Trump Trucks and Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model Drive for Five continues at Lee County Speedway, with all six classes in action. It is also Pirate and Princesses night, so kids dress up in your best Pirate or Princess attire and come take part in all the fun activities, including a treasure hunt.

Saturday, August 7, is the second Eve of Destruction with Auto Bowling, Figure 8 Racing, Flag Pole race, Bus Racing and much more.
