Gharst takes SIA season championship trophy, title Lantz wins mod feature from last, Stats dominates for sport mod win
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (Oct. 2, 2010) – Before Saturday’s Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders feature, officials told Kaley Gharst to stop on the front stretch following the race to be honored as the season champion, along with the feature winner. Gharst didn’t need to stop with anyone; he put an exclamation point on the season coming from deep in the field to get the win.

Wyatt Lantz, who has not liked his car at Lee County this season, was fast as well, as he won the IMCA Modified feature from last place, while Rod Stats dominated in his IMCA Sport Mod to get the win. Jake Wenig and Wayne Noble started out front and led every lap in the Hobby Stock and Wild Thing features to get wins.

Russ Hall dominated the Sprint Invaders event early, until he got tangled with a lapped car as the field worked on lap 11. With 10 laps down, the 10 car of Rager Phillips inherited the lead.

Phillips dominated, but had cars quickly reeling him in, including Kaley Gharst, who had moved up to second and began pressuring the race leader with a hand full of laps remaining.

Phillips would get hard into the guardrail in turn two, allowing Gharst, Bobby Mincer and Matt Sutton to get by quickly. Gharst ran away over the final couple laps to get the win, while Sutton tried to real in Mincer to no avail. Jeff Mitrisen did get by Phillips for fourth.

Lonne Heap lead much of the early stages of the IMCA Modified feature, as he hugged the bottom of the racetrack, but the bottom seemed to go away some and the field to advantage of a mid-race caution to real in Heap. Dennis LaVeine used the high side to take the lead and looked to have a win in his sites, but Lantz was charging hard from 15th. While working on lap 19, LaVeine jumped the cushion in turn two, and Lantz split the middle of Heap and LaVeine to take the lead. Lantz would lead the final two laps to get the win.

LaVeine continued to have problems over the final two laps and faded to seventh, while Heap held on for second. Tyler Cale made an outstanding last lap move to pick up the third spot, while Bill Roberts war fourth and Jeff Gerhardt finished fifth.

Stats started third, and when he got the front early in the race, he was never challenged en route to the win, though he was to turn three on the final lap before a caution flew that made him run and extra lap and face a green-white-checkered finish. It was no problem, however, as he drove away again to an easy win.

Phillip Cossel finished second, followed by Eric Flander and Rodger Dresden in third and fourth respectively. Mike Shelton rounded out the top five.

Wenig led every lap and completely dominated the Hobby Stock feature, though Rob Wilsey did his best to hang close. It was not to be, though, as Wilsey settled for second. Jim Oliver, Jr., had a good run to finish third, while Tanner Thomann (with a bent left a-arm) raced up to the fourth spot. Adam Scott had his best career finish at Lee County, in fifth.

Noble continues to be fast in his Wild Thing, as he ran away with a feature win after starting on the pole. Nick Wilkerson, who started deep in the field, tried to make a race of it late but could do nothing with the eventual winner and had to settle for second. Chuck Fullenkamp ran a solid third and Bill Michel was fourth. Richard Bank rounded out the top five.

Racing action returns to the fast 3/8th mile Lee County Speedway this Saturday, Oct. 9, with the Heartland Challenge. New this year will be a practice night on Oct. 22, where there will be a dj partying in the pits after the races! Check out www.leecountyspeedway.com for more information.
