Fenton
gets first Hobby Stock win at LCS Dresden, Strothman get first wins, Foster
nips Crear at the line
DONNELLSON, IA (June 27,
2011) – In the last few years Dane Fenton has had a lot of second places
finishes and some extremely untimely bad luck that has kept him out of
victory lane at Lee County Speedway. Friday, for the first time, none of
that happened as he picked up his first career Hobby Stock win on Family
Motors and Big Country 103.1 night at the races.
In what turned out to be the
best finish of the night Josh Foster picked up another IMCA Modified win,
while Rodger Dresden held on for a IMCA Sport Mod win. Corey Strothman was
able to close the deal on his first IMCA Stock Car win of the season and
David Helenthal won in the Wild Things.
For once, Fenton got a
little luck while running second to Matt Tucker with four laps down in the
Hobby Stock Feature event. While under caution, Tucker had to leave the
track with a flat tire, giving the lead to Fenton. Fenton had challenged for
a couple laps, but when Tucker left there was nothing but open track and 11
laps between Fenton and the win. Ray Raker, who eventually finished second,
challenged early then faded, as he began to battle with Dan Wenig for the
second spot. Wenig pressured Raker the rest of the way but would have to
settle for third. Tanner Thomann came from the back to finish fourth, while
Mike Amenell had his best finish to date in fifth.
The best race of the night
came courtesy the IMCA Modifieds, which saw Foster make a last lap pass for
the win. Dustin Crear led the first 19 laps and was nearly side by side with
Foster when they took the white flag, after Foster had used a slide job to
get in front of him coming to the stripe. But a crossover move and a good
run to the stripe allowed Crear to lead lap 19 but he could not hold on.
Foster would pull away down the backstretch and take the win. Crear would
follow his first career win last week with a 19 laps led second place
finish. Wyatt Lantz, Brandon Banks and Brandon Savage would round out the
top five respectively.
Dresden took the lead on lap
two and held off several challenges, including a pair late in the race from
Jim Gillenwater. After catching Dresden on lap 11, a lapped car held up
Gillenwater and allowed Dresden to get away. Gillenwater again caught the
race winner in the final turn, but couldn’t get by as Dresden raced to the
stripe with a one car length advantage. Gillenwater did run second, while
Dean Kratzer was third. Joe Bliven was the highest finishing crate engine,
as he ran in fourth. Jeff Mueller, after going to the back of the field
charged to fifth.
One week ago, Strothman led
all but two laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature, this week he left no doubt
who was going to lead the last two laps, as he dominated throughout en route
to a near straight away advantage win. Matt Greiner got to second but could
do little with Strothman, as there was little time and he was still
contending with the charge from Jeff Mueller, who finished third. Cale
Samberg had a strong run to finish fourth, while Ryan Cook finished fifth.
Helenthal was again
dominate, as he took the lead early in the event and held off a late race
charge from Nick Wilkerson. Wilkerson’s attempts to get by were futile as he
was forced to settle for second. Darin Smith ran third, while Chuck
Fullenkamp took the fourth spot. Bill Michel rounded out the top five.
This is a busy week at Lee
County Speedway, as events kick off Thursday, June 30, with the 4th
Annual Liberty Cup, featuring the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds, as
well as $700 to win IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Sport Mods. Also, it is kids’
boxcar races at intermission, so make your favorite racecar out of a box and
put straps to hang it around your shoulders and come join the fun! All kids
in the TA Auto & Tire Junior Fan Club are welcome to attend. For more
