Phillips Makes History -
Purkey Captures 7th Title!
SOUTH COFFEYVILLE, OK (Oct. 24 2010) - The Andy's Frozen Custard #75 of Terry Phillips broke a record, held by Scott Bloomquist at the Bud Purkey Memorial Sunday night. Phillips win marks his 101st with the Lucas Oil MLRA, the most wins by any one driver in any dirt late model series. After a power outage left the track without electricity for most of Saturday the event was postponed until Sunday. Phillips passed team mate and pole sitter Jeremy Payne to lead all 50 laps of the Lucas Cattle Company A Feature. Terry Phillips GRT by Phillips is also sponsored by Don Babb Motorsports and is powered by a Hatfield Racing Engine. The record breaking win by Phillips came on the last race of the 2010 Lucas Oil MLRA season. Coming into the feature event four points separated Al Purkey and Brad Looney for the series title. Looney started the feature third, Purkey took the green in the eleventh starting position. Looney held steady finishing 5th, but Purkey maneuvered through the field to finish sixth, taking the 2010 Lucas Oil MLRA points championship by two points. This is Purkey's 7th career MLRA championship. Brad Looney finished the season in second with Dave Eckrich in third, in one of the most exciting and intense championship chases in series history. Evan Hubert driver of the 9E Lucas Oil Products/Rockstar Energy Drink, Russell Baker powered MasterSbilt is the 2010 Lucas Oil MLRA Rookie of the Year. Jeremy Payne nearly swept the entire event with wins in both the modified and late model heats, pole dashes and the modified feature. Payne's 74 GRT by Phillips finished 2nd in the Lucas Cattle Company A Feature. Complete and final 2010 Lucas Oil MLRA Points standings will be available at www.MLRAracing.com. Heat winners Friday night included, Jeremy Payne, Brad Looney and Dave Eckrich. Hatfield Racing Engines/Larry Shaw Race Cars Pole Dashes were postponed from Friday evening to Sunday due to a late rain shower on Friday. The top six Lucas Oil MLRA drivers lined up for a quick ten laps to determine the first three rows of the A Feature. Jeremy Payne and Terry Phillips would take the top two spots with Brad Looney, Brandon McCormick on row two. Matt Johnson and Dave Eckrich finished the pole dash in the 5th and 6th spots, to earn row three feature positions. Six cars from the B Feature transferred to the A Main Event. Gary Christian started and finished the B Feature in first. The 33K of Billy Koons Jr. ran second, Rookie of the Year Evan Hubert in the 9E was third. The final three spots went to Joey Vaughn, Justin Wells and Bill McMurtrie. Two series provisionals were awarded, one to the 77A of Justin Asplin and the other to the 22V of Alan Vaughn who experienced a fuel pump problem during the B Feature.
