New Names New Faces as Week Number Seven is Lucky For All!
by: Dennis Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA. (May 26, 2006) - Normally thinking, the number seven can be
somewhat of a lucky number. On week number seven, luck would be described in
many ways. First the weather would make for the best night of racing for first
year promoter Toby Kruse. “Finally we got the night that we have been looking
for,” say’s Kruse. “The rain that fell on Thursday worked out just right. We
didn’t have to guess on how much water we needed we just worked with what we had
and the track really came together very good for us.” Second, one hundred race
teams and a capacity crowd were on hand to kick off the racing Memorial Day
weekend. Third, the evening started out when crewmember Greg Godfrey proposed
marriage to Carrie Thomas, with a sign on the side of Jeff Wollam’s I.M.C.A.
Stock Car, and the young lady accepted. The forth lucky moment or moments came
when in all four of the I.M.C.A. classes had all first time winners this year to
visit victory lane. And the fifth Cinderella story of the night would come with
the winner of the I.M.C.A. Modified feature winner, as Adam Bolin would win his
first career feature event.
Racing has always been considered to be just being at the right place at the
right time, for our four feature winners persistence paid off big time this past
Friday night. Luke Veren has went winless since his championship year in 2004,
finally had his bad luck changed as he would lead start to finish in the
I.M.C.A. Stock Car eighteen lap feature event. Jay Schmidt would finish second
and stay close to Veren, but was never able to put together a solid charge to
the front.
Jason Mallicoat who entered the night as the point leader in the I.M.C.A. Sport
Mod division even though a feature win had eluded him. But lucky week seven
would change his season and build on his point lead. Mallicoat would make a pass
of Austin Kaplan on lap eight and would go on to score his first Marshalltown
Speedway feature win.
Kevin Sather like Mallicoat would begin the evening as the point leader also
without a feature win. Gary Bryant would roll down the front straight a way
bringing out the red flag, on lap seven, Bryant climbed from the car unhurt
ending his night. On the restart Sather would make a high side pass to take the
lead and would go on to his first feature of the year.
The final Cinderella story of the evening would come in the I.M.C.A. Modified
feature. In the day of a driver progressing through the class ranks, Adam Bolin
proved on Friday night that it is not always necessary. Bolin only in his second
full season of racing has never raced anything but a I.M.C.A. Modified. “I went
to the races three years ago and they put me in the car to pack the track. I
liked it, so I said, this is what I am going to do,” said Bolin in his victory
lane interview. Dad and I went out and bought a 2000 Jet Mod, we rebuilt
everything on the car and we just went racing.” Last year Adam raced just at
Independence on Saturday nights, decided to try two nights a week this year.
“This is just unbelievable,” continued Bolin. Jeff and I raced side by side and
he gave me a lot of room, and afterwards he came up to me smiling and said good
race, and that means a lot to me to have someone say that to me.”
The truly remarkable night of racing would end at 9:35 as the band “Clutter
Billy” would play for the crowd who had witnessed one of the most exciting
nights of the racing season.
Racing action will continue next Friday night with Minuteman Night at the races.
On had to sign autographs will be 410-Sprint Car driver Billy Alley of Lincoln
Nebraska who also will be taking his winged sprint car to the high banks of the
speedway. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps at 6:45 and the first race
of the night will begin at 7:30.
