Minute Man Makes Appearance at Marshalltown!
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, Ia. (June 2, 2006) - Week number eight roared to life this past Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway with the Minute Man Printing night at the speedway. Also on hand was Winged Sprint Car driver Billy Alley from Lincoln Nebraska who would turn hot laps into competition with one of Marshalltown local modified drivers.

As Alley toured the high banked quarter mile speedway at the thirteen second mark, promoter Toby Kruse would offer a challenge to the winner of the nights I.M.C.A. Modified feature winner to go head to head with the winged warrior for a five lap match race where the Modified would start one half lap ahead of the Sprint Car. All that was now needed was who would win the Modified feature event.

Jack Durbin would jump into the lead on the opening lap and hold the top spot until Troy Cordes would take his turn at the top spot. Yellow flags would slow the event until the half waypoint. Then it seemed like the drivers would get into their racing rhythm and run the last ten laps with no major problems. With six laps left, Mike O’Lear would play his hand and move to the inside of the leader Cordes. The two would run side by side until O’Lear had the momentum to make the low side pass and go on for his first win of the season. Finishing second was T J Stalker from Mason City who was making his first appearance at the speedway. Third would go to Cordes followed by Scott Simatovich.

Mike O’Lear and Sprint Car driver Billy Alley would now have there match race. With O’Lear out in front by a half a lap, Alley would quickly make up the difference and on the second lap would pass O’Lear. “I heard him, and I not really sure I saw him”, said a sheepish O’Lear, “man was that guy fast.” Alley was very appreciative to promoter Toby Kruse, “this was really fun,” said Alley. “I knew what kind of kidding I would of gotten if I didn’t beat the Modified, Mike and I was just having fun and that is what it is all about.”

What many considered to be the showstopper on Friday night was the I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. As twenty-six cars took the green flag, Kyle Krampe would jump into the lead. It would quickly turn into a five-car battle for the number one position leading up to a yellow flag on lap four. On the restart Krampe would be spun in turn one, ending his dream of a feature win. On the restart it would turn into a four-car battle, between Rick Brown, Don Vis, Tracy Ginger and Steve Meyer. Vis would lead on lap eight and Brown on lap nine. By lap fourteen Brown and Gienger would be tied for the lead. With three laps to go, Gienger would make the low side pass and go on to post his first win of the season, making him the sixth feature winner in the first eight weeks. Brown, Vis and Mike VanGenderen would follow Gienger across the finish line.

Jason Mallicoat would make it back to back wins in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature by taking the lead from rookie driver Kyle Brown on lap two and then speed off to score the win. Tony Olson would have his best run of the season and finish second followed by Keith Williamson and Danny Dvorak.

The lead would change hands through the event but at the end Kevin Sather would pick up his second win of the year. Joe Bown would take the early lead, as the field would run two, three and four wide behind him. Mike Smith would take his turn up front until the half waypoint when Sather would take the top spot for good. Finishing behind Sather and Smith were Luke Wanninger and Dustin Elliott.

Next Friday night the speedway will host the first “Marshalltown Speedway After Hours” party, which will run from 5:30 until 7:00. Discount prices in the concessions stand will be enjoyed by everyone. Next week will also be “Relay For Life Night” with hot laps starting at 6:45 and the first green flag of the night will start at 7:30.
