Percentages Pay’s off for Promoter
By Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN. Ia. (June 9, 2006) - First year promoter Toby Kruse was given a
30% chance that rain might be a factor before the end of week number nine, but
the freshman promoter wouldn’t let a possible forecast slow his program. “The
way I looked at it was that we had a 70% chance of getting the program in,” said
a positive Kruse, “and that’s the way I look at it.” Ninety-five race teams
would fill the pit area as a near capacity crowd was on hand for the annual
Relay For Life Night at the Speedway.
With the first half of the racing season coming to an end, the racing action was
at full throttle for week number nine, as the three and four wide side by side
racing is becoming a weekly event each and every night in all of the four
sanctioned I.M.C.A. divisions. First time feature winners would again find there
way to victory lane in the I.M.C.A. Modified and Sport Mod features as the list
continues to grow of drivers taking home the top position. Kevin Stoa and Kyle
Wahlert are to such drivers who found victory lane for the first time at
Marshalltown’s high-banked quarter mile raceway. Wahlert would win in his second
appearance of the year while Stoa would take three times before a victory would
be his.
Mark McNeece would jump into the lead on the first lap but would spin in turn
three on lap two giving the lead over to three time feature winner Brett
Ladehoff. Ladehoff would be Mr. Smooth, up to lap nine when a yellow would come
out, bunching the field up on the restart. Ladehoff who had things going his way
on a tricky but fast racetrack would feel the pressure of Wahlert on lap ten,
with five laps to go. Wahlert would make the pass for the lead and then would
have to work around lap traffic for the remaining laps to score his first career
win at Marshalltown. Ladehoff, Danny Dvorak and Scott Durlin would all finish
together, just waiting to see if Wahlert would make a mistake.
Kevin Stoa, who said that he had never even been to the city of Marshalltown
until his first appearance on May 26th, was pleased on the nights out come. “The
race track had laid down a lot of rubber, it was slick but it was smooth and
fast, you just had to drive the car and stay on top of it,” said Stoa, who took
the lead on the opening lap. Stoa would have to hold off a determined Vern
Jackson through out the event, with Jackson staying right on his back bumper.
Jackson would run the high side in the early going and would take the lead on
lap eight. With Stoa running low and Jackson high, the two veteran drivers would
change places on the raceway, with Jackson going high, forcing Stoa down low.
The two drivers would slice and dice with Jackson holding the lead until a
yellow on lap seventeen. On the restart Stoa would go to the low side make the
pass and go on to take the lead and get the win. Behind Stoa and Jackson was
David Brown and point leader Jeff Schroyer.
Opening night feature winner Damon Murty would finally get back to victory lane
in the I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature, as he would post his second feature win of
the season. Dusty Vis would lead from the opening lap, with Steve Meyer staying
close to Vis and the top spot. A group of five cars would put the pressure on
Vis with three time feature winner Steve Meyer looking like he would be poised
for win number four. On lap seven with Murty running low, Murty would take the
lead, and Meyer would follow him past Vis for second, as Vis would drop to sixth
at the end. Third place would go to Jeff Wollam followed by Scooter Dulin.
Donovan Smith and Luke Wanninger would both post feature wins in the I.M.C.A.
Hobby Stock features. The win would be Wanninger’s third win and Smith’s sixth
through the first half of the season.
Next Friday night will be the Mid-Season part of the season with hot starting at
6:45 and the first race of the evening getting underway at 7:30.
