Hot Night at the Hot Marshalltown Speedway
by: By Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA. (July 28, 2006) - It was a very hot summer night, as the
racing month of July came to an end this past Friday night at the Marshalltown
Speedway. The annual Hy-Vee Night roared to life in front of eager and
enthusiastic race fans, and a pit area full of race teams. The hot weather also
made for some hot battles on the race track as again this week promoter Toby
Kruse would have the high banked quarter mile raceway groomed for two and three
wide racing. “You can’t believe the amount of water that we had to put on this
track to make it the way we wanted it to be,” said Kruse. “I think the end
result was pretty good. It was wide, fast and very racy.”
What had been in the making for many weeks finally became realality for one
driver, as Kyle Krampe’s dream finally would come true, his first feature win.
Krampe would lead the opening lap of the I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature, like he has
done on many occasions, but unlike weeks prior, for the first time in his young
career he would finish on top as this week’s winner. Krampe related to the late
former I.M.C.A. Champion Eddie Anderson, would hold off two to three different
drivers right till the checkered flag would fly bringing an end to the long
awaited victory. “I never really gave up trying,” said a happy Krampe in victory
lane. “Dad just kept telling me to do what I have been doing, and pretty soon it
would happen and tonight it did.” The youngster has lead in most of the early
laps of every feature this year, but bad luck would change his outcome every
night. “I knew that Shawn was there at the end, but I didn’t change my line, I
just kept making the guys behind me change there’s, and it worked.” Shawn
Hoskins would finish a very close second behind Krampe followed by point leader
and last weeks feature winner Tracy Gienger in third and Dave Atcher forth.
“They say the first one’s the hardest to get, now were going to see if that is
true or not”.
Mike O’Lear would make it eight weeks between victory’s as he would jump into
the lead on the opening lap and hold onto the lead through many yellow flags to
score his second win of the year. Through the first five laps more yellow flags
would be shown until the eighteen car starting field would get into there racing
rhythm. By lap fifteen, O’Lear would have a sizable lead built up for himself,
but lap traffic and a hard charging Verne Jackson would make the final two laps
exciting for the cheering fans in the stands. “I knew where Vern and Jimmy were
and I could see us closing in on the lap traffic, luckily, they stayed up high
and I went low and got around them,” said O’Lear in his post race interview.
Jackson, Jimmy Gustin and Scott Simatovich would round out the top four.
Chris Mosher would lead the opening three laps of the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature
until Brett Ladehoff would take the lead coming off of turn two. Ladehoff would
be untouchable through out the remaining of the fifteen-lap feature until the
last lap when he over drove turn four almost spinning himself out. “I just went
in the corner two hard, and just about lost it, thank goodness I didn’t and was
able to save the car for the win,” said Brett in victory lane. With Ladehoff’s
win, it would be his fifth of the season. Jason Mallicoat would finish second
followed by Austin Kaplan and Mosher.
Donovan Smith would win his twelfth feature of the season and his fifth in a row
in the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock division. Smith would take the lead from Dustin
Elliott on lap seven and then drive off from the rest of the field. Jamie Schirm
would finish second for the second week in a row followed by Kevin Sather in
third and Joe Bown in forth.
Next Friday night the final full month of the season begins with the Hogeland
Auto Plaza Kids Night at the Speedway. Many gifts and prizes will be handed out
to the youngsters in attendance. Hot laps will begin at 6:45 and the first race
of the night will get underway starting at 7:30.
