“Friday Night Familiar Faces Find Victory Lane”
By Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (April 21) - Week number two came to life on Friday night,
with 70-degree weather and a clear sky. And for the first time since late
winter, it appeared as if spring had clearly sprung. 108-race teams made there
way to the high-banked quarter mile raceway, and they found a very wide and
smooth racetrack. “Tonight’s track conditions are what the guy’s work to perfect
each and every week, tonight everything worked out just as we planned,” said
promoter Toby Kruse.
With the perfect track conditions, the large grandstand crowd had the best of
both worlds. Good hard racing action and only a couple of yellow flags through
the entire night that would slow down the competition.
With the racing action close, new faces would either make there way back into
victory lane, or first timers would find the Aarons Victory lane for there first
time. Danny Dvorak, 2005 I.M.C.A. Sport Mod National Champion finally was able
to pilot his car into victory lane. After 21-top ten finishes in 2006, Dvorak
would make a high side pass of Scott Jorpeland on lap three, then work his way
through lap traffic the remaining 9-laps to score his first Marshalltown
victory. “I’ve felt like I had the car to win at times, but it just didn’t work
out, tonight everything just fell into place, it feels good to be able to find
victory lane,” said Dvorak. Finishing second was Kevin Sather, for the second
week in a row. Last weeks feature winner Austin Kaplan would finish third
followed by Jorpeland.
Devin Smith in the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock division would also pick up his first
Marshalltown victory. Smith who has moved up from a Bomber division is following
his National Champion brothers, Donovan and Dustin who have moved in to the
Stock Car class. “I’ve got some big shoes to fill, people have set a high bar
for me to live up to, I just want to race and have fun. And when you win, it’s
even more fun, tonight was fun,” said Smith in victory lane. Terry Shaffer would
finish second, following Smith the entire 12-lap event. Last weeks winner Luke
Wanninger would finish third followed by Mike Zeman in forth.
Jeff Wollam who went winless in 2004 & 2005 before scoring a win during week
nineteen in 2006, would lead from start to finish in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock
Car feature to score his victory. It would definitely be going from the worst
last week to the best this week for Wollam. “Weeks like last week just happen,”
said Wollam. “I truly owe this win to the crew for not giving up, they just keep
working and working to get this car right, they did it and we won, thanks to my
crew.” Rookie Paul Shepard would finish 26th last week would finish second this
week. Last week’s winner Tracy Gienger finished third followed by Damon Murty in
forth.
Vern Jackson would make a pass with two laps remaining to score his victory over
J.D Auringer in the I.M.C.A. Modified feature. Jason Murray would take the early
lead, but would give way to Auringer on lap three. Jackson would stay close just
waiting for the right moment to make his move. Then with two laps to go, Jackson
would make a high side pass for the lead and go on for the win. “It was a good
and fast race track tonight, I felt if I could stay close I still would have a
chance. A couple of times he started to pull away, but I think the lap traffic
might have affected the out come. This one’s for the fans that support me every
week here in Marshalltown,” said Jackson in victory lane. Behind Jackson and
Auringer was John Logue and last week’s winner Jimmy Gustin.
Only one driver would start the season off in a perfect way. Tim Hennigar would
take the lead on lap five of the Dwarf Car feature then go on to claim the
victory. Eric Hendrickson would lead the opening lap before being passed by Mike
Kennedy on lap two. After lap five Hennigar would be untouchable the remaining
seven laps. Behind Tim Hennigar would be Andy Hennigar followed by Mike Morrill
and Kennedy.
The final checkered flag would fall at 9:25, bringing an end to week two. Next
Friday night is designated “Media Night” at the speedway. Hot laps will begin at
6:45 and the first race of the night will get under way at 7:30.
