Aikey checks out on Marshalltown field for first Deery win of
2007
From Bill Martin, IMCA Public Relations
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (June 19) – The driver with the most wins in Deery Brothers
Summer Series his tory was up to his old tricks again Tuesday night at
Marshalltown Speedway.
Jeff Aikey inherited the front spot after a fracas just before midway that sent
leader Terry Neal to the pits and second running Darrel DeFrance to the rear of
the field. Aikey ran away with the IMCA Sunoco Late Model contest from that
point, lapping up to sixth place and taking the checkers a half lap in front of
Jeremy Grady.
The victory was Aikey’s career 48th and paid $2,000. The five-time and defending
series champion had won just once before at Marshalltown, in 1987. Tuesday’s win
was also his first of the current series.
Bobby Hansen was third. DeFrance worked his way back up to fourth and Jeff Bair
rounded out the official top five.
Grady started on the pole and led the first 17 circuits. Neal was on the move
from his 11th starting spot, bring ing DeFrance along when he passed Grady for
the point on lap 18.
Neal had DeFrance, Aikey, Jason Hahne and Grady in pursuit before the fateful
lap 24 caution. DeFrance got into the back of Neal’s ride on the ensuing
re-start, causing him to spin and collecting Hahne and Boone McLaughlin in the
process.
Neal was forced to the pits, DeFrance went to the back and Aikey was put at the
front. He’d lead the rest of the way, stretching his advantage over Grady the
last half of the race.
“B” feature winner Hershel Roberts fashioned a sixth place showing in the main
event.
Austin Kaplan won the evening’s Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature.
The series travels to Independence Motor Speedway for an early holiday show on
Tuesday, July 3. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps are at 6 p.m. and racing
gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
IMCA sanctioned Modifieds are also on the program at Independence.
